Racist Idiots in North Davidson County Discover Spray Paint
Perhaps the only thing more annoying than seeing an asshole with a giant SS tattoo at the grocery story, when all I want is some cereal and maybe some chocolate milk, is wondering
whether he's also the guy making my neck of the woods ugly--or if we have a bigger problem.
A faint swastika can still be seen on this barn.
On Eaton's Creek Road, just past the northeast border of Beaman Park, someone has spray-painted a swastika on a barn (and though you can't see it, since it's been mostly removed, a crude penis).
And then, just past where the new Beaman Park trailhead will go, there's more racist graffiti at the corner of Old Hickory Boulevard and Bull Run Road. This says "Fuck Obama," which, of course, in and of itself isn't racist--but the spraypainted "KKK" over it puts the presidential sentiments in context. And again, more penises.
I have to say, just on a side note, that the penises make me a little sad--that there are guys out here in Davidson County who think that a picture of a penis belongs with a swastika or the KKK; that it, too, is something that people should fear; that it represents hatred and power (in this case, of course, white power). How weird and terrible must it be to experience your perfectly ordinary body part as the seat of all your rage.
I also wonder if it makes me a bad feminist that I find cartoonish representations of penises--which are clearly supposed to invoke male hegemony--more hilarious and sad than scary? When I see stuff like this, I wonder why any woman, no matter how racist, would ever get involved with white supremacist movements. These guys couldn't make it any clearer that they think just as little of women.
