Time Mag Explores: Why Are We (Southerners) So Fat?

Arnold's, Harper's, I do love thee.
Wait, it might not be the food, you say, Dr. David Bassett of the University of Tennessee? He says it's because we don't do much. Because you know, in the South, we love our cars. We don't walk to the bus or the train station. We shuttle ourselves. Ever notice we don't have sidewalks in this state? Of course, it's also just f@%#ing hot here in the summer, and walking sucks when it's hot. I like to avoid it, if possible. But it also makes you not fat. And Colorado doesn't have that many fat people.
Did we pick the wrong, sweaty region for skinny jeans. Time says yes.

Also, there aren't a lot of sidewalks and busses and train stations and whatever because so much of the South is rural. Seriously. Really, really, really rural. Cities don't have an excuse. Larger suburbs and commuter towns don't have an excuse. But the millions of people that live out in the country? Where it still takes 20 minutes to drive to the grocery store going 65 miles an hour? I'll give those fat fucks a break on taking a car, you know?

And Time Magazine called Tennessee fat, not me.
If you're going to rank stories, I'd say the TVA spill is the biggest story of the decade to be covered in Nashville papers. It's just not quite as scandalous or as sexy as the McNair shootings.

I think Terence has an excellent point. You can make numbers and rankings say anything you want, but when it comes right down to it, obesity is a problem for the entire country.
That said, I don't disagree with anything in the article. My new bike has been sitting in the shed for weeks now; it's far to hot and humid for me to ride it (I tried; I nearly passed out). I do try to take a walk around the building during the day, but the sad truth is I don't get any exercise. It's my own fault. I am fortunate though to have access to good food and don't have to rely on convenience or even grocery stores for sustenance so I'm not overweight.

Then I figured out that the reason they don't mind it is because all of these people here stay indoors or drive around in air conditioned cars.
I eventually acclimated to the weather and you all are a bunch of pussies, wearing sweaters when it goes below 80 degrees, and parkas and mittens when it is 50.

Come October a person gets tired of cotton shirts and wants to rock the layered look. All that "ooooh, it's so coooooooold!" is just to save face.
