Pop Quiz, Hotshot: What's Your Favorite Nashville Commercial?
Last Friday, the fine folks over at the Onion A.V. Club asked their staff to list their favorite local commercials. Unfortunately, the only A.V. Club member we can think of who hails from Nashville (the uber-talented Noell Murray) did not participate. Thus, we were left with the contributions of one Music City commenter who offered up the Watson's Pool & Spa girl*.
*According to a very unscientific poll of Nashville-area males aged 18-29, the Watson's girl once appeared on TV wearing only a red bikini, effectively doing for the genre what Phoebe Cates' pool exit in Fast Times at Ridgemont High did for movies.
Local TV spots -- cheesy, sexy or otherwise -- are ubiquitous. The quick-drying glue that binds the fabric of shared, regional experience.
Every city has a car dealer (Carnival Kia), personal injury lawyer (Bart Durham) or struggling theme park (Holiday World - now with free fountain sodas!) that makes its mark on the local consciousness by giving up more of their time, money, effort or self-respect to make a lasting impression.
With that thought in mind, here's a hastily compiled list (along with video) of Pith's favorite Nashville commercials:
Bart Durham's Nashville Soap Opera: Sets the standard for local, personal injury mini-serials.
Performance Costume: Nothing says quality like a creepy hunchback who reappears every Halloween.
Holiday World
Carnival Kia: Last weekend, a friend got her Taboo partner to successfully guess the word "Ferris wheel" by invoking this Antioch dealership. These are the ties that bind.
Picture Frame Warehouse
Heritage House Smorgasbord: The one with the kids standing in front of a back-projected "mountain of roast beef."
Trickett Honda w/Louis (formerly Woody) the Dog: Silly Trickett. Dogs can't drive!
Realtor Stan Gunselman: Out standing in his field.
