Planet Bill Hobbs Whirls Off Into New Orbit
It's as if the inmates were given control of the asylum for a while, but now the authorities have thought better of it and ended that little experiment. Things were getting weird, it's true, but it's better now. Chris Devaney has become the new state GOP chair, and he knew what to make his first order of business. As Adam Kleinheider reports, Devaney has dispatched the bombastic culture warrior Bill Hobbs.
Bye bye Bill Hobbs
Hobbs had to be the worst flack in the history of Tennessee politics. He actually phoned reporters to harangue them and make absurd demands. Like all far-right kooks, he hates the media. If you're trying to encourage positive coverage, he's not your guy. Ask any reporter what they think about Hobbs, and eyes roll.
He couldn't resist the spotlight. That's a mortal sin for any flack. Anytime your communications director is attracting unfavorable press and drawing denunciations from your party's senior elected officials, like when Hobbs attacked Barack Obama as a Muslim loving anti-Semite, something's definitely wrong. Robin Smith couldn't see it because she's as crazy as Hobbs. We're happy to report Devaney seems like a normal human being. That's a starting point anyway.
Update: Jackson Baker on why Hobbs is history.
