Gamel Gone: Sounds' Top Prospect Leaving Nashville...Forever?

Oh sweet-swinging lefty. We hardly knew ye.
Well that was quick. Nashville Sounds' third baseman Mat "Don't Call Me Matt" Gamel got called up to the Brewers yesterday after only 33 games in Triple-A. That's one less game than former Sound/current stud Ryan Braun logged before joining the Big Club. Which means, conservatively speaking, Gamel is now your front-runner for 2009 National League Rookie of the Year.

Now the Brewers say that Gamel is coming up to be a designated hitter for the team's upcoming interleague series and nothing more. But let's face it. His ticket is strictly one-way and very much non-refundable. We don't want to geek out on you guys too much, but Gamel's talents (1.075 OPS, people!!!) are simply too large for the snug environs of Greer Field.

Gamel would have turned 24 this July. He is survived by shortstop Alcides Escobar and catcher Angel Salome, who both really need to start hitting sometime soon. He will be missed*.

*Forgive the faux eulogy, it's simply how we process the loss of our favorite prospect. On the bright side, we now have time to focus our considerable fawning towards a new, soon-to-be Sound. So come on down...Brett Lawrie! Although he's still in the low minors, a recent position switch to second base means he'll probably be in Nashville in t-minus one season. So why Lawrie? Well, not only is he Canadian (exotic!), but he's also been swinging a wooden bat since junior high. Tres precocious!
