Henry hasn't understood what anyone's saying since Wilder retired.
Sen. Douglas Henry, 82, comes out against texting while driving, now that he's figured out what texting is. In the Senate Finance Committee yesterday, he demonstrated his new expertise on this topic:

Henry: "Look at these two keyboards. This is a telephone keyboard, and this is a - twittering? What do you call it?"
Woodson: "Blackberry."

Henry: "Blackberry keyboard. Now I wouldn't recommend it, but I can keep my eye on the road and also dial a number on this one. But I defy you, even if you've got the eyes of a buzzard, to make a message on this and keep your eyes on the road."

Yes, I heard that tape on NPR this morning too, and laughed out loud, just like you did. But Duck Henry, bless him, is right on this one. And no matter how old he is, he's still making a lot more sense than the far-right wackos now in charge on the Hill these days.

I'd imagine he's against the Kill Old People Cheap bill, for example, and probably doesn't think it's wise to let people bring their guns to parks, playgrounds and bars. Sure he's old, but at least he's not a nutbag.

Duck Henry is the sage of the legislature and it will be a sad day when he's not there. Just go there and see the wise questions he asks and the gracious reception he gives anyone and everyone. He is a statesman in the truest sense of the word.
