Campfield Offers His Thoughts on Kent Williams
Rep. Stacey Campfield just stopped by the gritty Legislative Plaza pressroom to give his thoughts on Speaker Kent Williams' return to the House Republican caucus. These comments, Campfield assured us, were pre-approved by none other than GOP leader Jason Mumpower. He has stuck duct tape across Campfield's mouth this session but will occasionally allow him to speak to reporters.
According to reports, House Republicans overwhelmingly favored letting Williams attend their caucuses again. But Campfield says a majority didn't actually vote to re-admit the speaker. "He did not receive a constitutional majority," Campfield says, but the caucus decided to let him in anyway because "that's the way it was going." Some lawmakers wouldn't vote and some weren't at the little private dinner party when the vote was taken, Campfield says. Whatever. More from the crazy representative from Knoxville:
"Kent was trying to drive a wedge in our caucus. It got to the point where people who hated him just said, 'Let him in because we're not able to talk about what we're doing.' I don't think anybody spoke glowingly of him the whole time. Almost every single member of the caucus spoke and I never heard anything glowing or loving about him. All I heard was, 'He's dividing our caucus and he's tearing us apart. We need to move forward and talk about our agenda.' Hopefully, now we're back to being 49 and Kent."
