WSJ Touts Bredesen for Health and Human Services
The Wall Street Journal today editorializes in favor of Phil Bredesen for secretary of health and human services. The headline: "Mugging Phil Bredesen. Advocacy groups sink a Cabinet candidate." But how much good can the WSJ's conservative editorial page do Bredesen in the Obama White House?
News leaks say Mr. Obama's next HHS choice may be Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, whose health-care views aren't widely known. Perhaps she'll turn out to be sensible. But it's a shame Mr. Obama will miss an opportunity to show the left of his party that it doesn't have a veto over reform-minded Democrats like Phil Bredesen.
Actually, Sebelius may not be the choice after all. Politico reported last night that Sebelius still hasn't talked to the president about the job. That's even though she's been in Washington since Friday for the National Governors Association meeting. But no one's mentioning Bredesen anymore. The latest name to pop up was Nancy-Ann DeParle, who served in Ned McWherter's Cabinet here and was administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration in the Clinton administration.
