Pithissippi Burning: Race, White Nationalism and American Culture

You may have noticed that recently, Pith was visited by some readers who are less than partial to the idea of a multi-racial society.

One commenter in particular tipped his hand by referring to himself as a "racialist" and anticipating a "day of reckoning" where liberals, judges and others will be thrown against the wall and dealt with.

I caught these cues because I'm sort of an aficionado of hate literature. Anything anti-white, black, Jewish, gay, straight, Christian, whatever, I find fascinating in a train-wreck sort of way. My interest began as a teenager, when I used to take the train home from school and would sometimes find hate filled propaganda tracts left on the seats of subway cars. The sentiments expressed in those leaflets were so foreign to me that I felt I was looking in on another world. Now I read the stuff wherever I can find it, usually in the darker corners of the Internet.

A few months back I finished reading a free Internet novel called "The Brigade," by H.A. Covington. Unlike most work in this genre, it functions as both a believable piece of fiction and a how-to guide for everything from bomb building, assassination and interrogation by torture.

The book is part of a series by the author, probably meant to be a set of founding documents for The Northwest Homeland, a state that now exists only in the fevered imagination of white separatists who spew about it in Internet chat rooms. The idea is that white people ("Aryans," actually) move to Washington, Oregon and Idaho, and drive out the "mud-people" who currently call it home, as well as any federal government and law enforcement. The movement even has a flag, pictured above.

The Brigade is a nuts and bolts diagram of how this white homeland should be started, complete with instructions on organizing terror cells, details on military and propaganda tactics and plenty of diatribes against the federal government, Jews, blacks and Hispanics. There are even two chapters devoted to systematically murdering the "Hollywood elite."

It's kind of like The Turner Diaries--a book which eventually led to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995--except that its aim is much more humble. Whereas Turner Diaries was a how-to for ridding the world of non-whites, The Brigade seeks to do so only in the Pacific Northwest.

In the wrong hands--like those of a weak minded white guy with a chip on his shoulder--The Brigade could be very dangerous. It describes a world very much like today's America, except that white culture has been entirely subsumed. In this world, affirmative action has run totally amok, with every position of power or authority occupied by an unqualified, low I.Q. minority, homosexual or lesbian. This of course has created a society where straight white men and women can't find work and any negative comment about President Hillary Clinton (seriously) qualifies as "hate speech" that can get you locked up for life. It has also led American democracy to devolve into a bloated corpse, little more than a feeding trough for greedy foreign (read: Jewish/ZOG) interests.

For a very few people, this is exactly how they see the world today. They will not view The Brigade as an ugly, transparent piece of racial propaganda. Rather, they will open its pages and find a positive affirmation of what they already think, along with detailed directions on how to correct these ills in the goriest way possible.

In an exchange with one of our loyal Pith readers, I knew in an instant that his worldview matched perfectly the one set forth in Covington's novel.

"We are in the last stage of a "democracy,"" the commenter wrote. "The part where the monkeys run the zoo. The zoo can't afford to stay in business any more. Easy solutions? There are none. Either remove voting rights from the welfare masses and felons, or clean house. Either way, it will be messy and nasty and bloody, but it has to be done."

In one sense, Covington and those who think like him, are right. In the next 50 years, white culture (such as it is) will cease to be the dominating force in the American landscape.

The cover of the most recent Atlantic magazine blared, "The End of White America?" The article was an exploration of how the U.S.'s cultural landscape has shifted irrevocably away from the blond-haired, blue-eyed ideal of the last century:

...Tiger Woods forever changed the country-club culture of golf, and Will Smith confounded stereotypes about the ideal leading man...Successful network-television shows like Lost, Heroes and Grey's Anatomy feature wildly diverse casts, and an entire genre of half-hour comedy, from The Colbert Report to The Office, seems dedicated to having fun with the persona of the clueless white male. The youth market is following the same pattern...the Cheetah Girls [are] a multiracial, multiplatform, trio of teenyboppers who recently starred in their third movie, or Dora the Explorer, the precocious, bilingual 7-year-old Latina adventurer who is arguably the most successful animated character on children's television today.

These trends have some white people quaking in their jack-boots. This fear is not new. Tom Buchanan, the wealthy, country-club jerk in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby, remarks, "The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be--will be utterly submerged. It's all scientific stuff; it's been proved."

Those words were first published in 1925.

But for many of the intervening years--especially post 1960s--those who held these kinds of beliefs belonged to small, marginalized groups. Vanderbilt professor Carol Swain has written extensively about these groups. In her book "The New White Nationalism," published in 2002, Swain conducted hundreds of interviews with white nationalists. Swain came away with the thesis that affirmative action and the integration of black art into popular culture further radicalized these whites and their followers, and were a boon to their recruitment efforts.

Today, with a black man elected to the highest office in the land, I fear that this minority is gaining mainstream adherents. It's not hard to see why. The economy is tanking and the immediate future of our republic looks grim. A small-minded person merely has to do point to the diminishing fortunes of those around him, and then to the White House, and say, "Look. The blacks did this."

Unfortunately, those of us on the other side of the issue don't have a handbook for how to move forward with this kind of social and cultural integration. There are no novels like "The Brigade" on our side of this chasm.

If you're a disgruntled white man and want to undo what ZOG and multiculturalism have wrought, just pick up a Covington novel and start planning.

But what does the other side do to advance its agenda? Watch Ghandi? Memorize King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail?

The way forward is unclear.

Obama promised us a "post racial" society, yet we are far from it. We have not even transcended the old fears of Fitzgerald's era, much less moved on to a higher plane of racial blindness. The Covington's of the world are as sure of themselves today as ever, maybe more so.

To paraphrase Faulkner, the past is not behind us. It isn't even past.
