Is Eric Crafton California Dreaming?
Eric Crafton's English Only got the Grey Lady treatment in this weekend's New York Times and, as we mentioned before, there wasn't a whole lot said that hadn't already been said before. But one quote did stick out like a sore thumb.:"I happened to see a state legislature meeting in California where several of the state representatives had interpreters at their desk because they couldn't speak English," Mr. Crafton said. "That's not the vision I have for Nashville."Interpreters for elected officials? Wow. I mean, if it's true, you can certainly see how that image might have a powerful effect on a mind such as Crafton's. But something about that scene just doesn't pass the smell test (and we're not the only ones picking up on the odor).
We've got a call into Crafton so we can get some specifics. Chances are it's probably not an outright lie, but something closer to a half-truth.

I'm delighted that Mr. Crafton is pushing this issue. When I was growing up in Boston, there were many Polish, Italian, Irish, German etc who were proud to speak English and insisted that their children speak English. If you want to live and function in the US then learn the language. I've spent several vacations in Mexico, etc and they made no attempt to accommodate me. So learn English. If this keeps going, English will the "second language".

Ferguson, the point is that if the person "pushing the issue" has to lie to explain why he's so concerned, the problem might not be nearly as dire as he would like you to think. And perhaps this whole "English will be a second language" stuff is really a bunch of fear mongering whose purpose is to use language as a proxy for discrimination.
And maybe, just maybe, you folks supporting this measure are all a bunch of patsies and chumps who let yourself get fleeced of your personal information (voter registration status, mailing address, etc.) for the sole purpose of putting together a mailing list for right wing causes.

Talking to Crafton this morning, he said he hadn't actually seen the session in person (big shock, I know) but he THINKS he saw something LIKE IT-- possibly in a local council meeting rather than on the state legislative level--on a Fox News segment "two or three years ago."
So take that for what it's worth...
