Vandy's Gameday Performance Leaves Something to be Desired

Last week, we asked Vanderbilt students to raise the bar. For the first time in school history, a Commodore's match-up was the featured game during ESPN's college football orgy Gameday.

Here was a chance for Dores' fans to separate themselves from the proverbial pack. To show the nation just how clever they really are.

Unfortunately, we forgot we're dealing with college kids, an age group determined to disguise whatever intelligence they may possess with a veil of sarcasm and gay jokes. To wit:

Sigh.

To be fair, there were a handful of scribbled missives that did meet our high expectations. "The Geeks Shall Inherit the Turf" was one of our favorites. And the "New Bailout Plan: Bet on the Dores" sign showed a surprising willingness to publicly acknowledge the outside world.

But some signs weren't clever or juvenile. They were just plain confusing.

After the jump, two that had us baffled...

Was Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville involved in some sort of real-estate scheme?

The Office reference is easy enough. But Rick and Bubba?

Drop some knowledge on us folks and leave your best guesses in the comments.

My favorite one was "4-0: It's Not Just Our GPA Anymore."

Excellent choice, GoldnI. Deadspin also reminded me of another favorite: "My butler went to Auburn." An appropriately snide complement to the "That's alright, that's OK, you'll all work for us one day" chant.

Overheard from my vantage on the outside of the chain link fence surrounding the compound.

Auburn Fan #1: Stupid f*cking Vandy! Puttin' a fence around GameDay!

Auburn Fan #2: Yeah, and they wouldn't let me in cuz of my purse! Hell, what could I hide in this little thing? Plus I woulda got a lot better sniper shot at Corso's head from out here anyway.

War Eagle, indeed.

The top two pics appear to be photos and not screen captures. I was a diligent viewer and never saw either on them the air. I did see the third, which I don't see as objectionable, just hard to understand.

"The Geeks shall inherit the Turf" was priceless.

Best:

"Corso scores more than Auburn"

"Phil Fulmer Ate My Other Sign"

"Vandy students love Hair 3.14"

All of the "Rick and Bubba" signs were of Auburn origin--hence the blue andd orange. I didn't ask, but I think Rick and Bubba must be Alabama radio jocks.

Have you been to other GameDay events? Chris Fowler told the Friday crowd it was the loudest and best attended he'd ever seen.

You picked the most random signs to show. Why don't you read some SEC football message boards and see what they think? I'll give you a head start. Most of them thought they were the best and most creative GameDay signs they'd seen. Why don't you watch the program more than twice before you grade out Vanderbilt?

Someone may want to explain the Hair 3.14 for the Auburn folks who may stumble by here.

Full disclosure: It puzzled my wife...a non-math type.

What, Hannan - no mention of how you continue to be dead-ass-wrong about this football team? What was it you said in your last disparaging piece about how Vandy hasn't played anybody? You and your writing are an absolute waste of space. You took what was a great weekend for Vanderbilt University and its football team, and somehow found a way to write a negative piece about it? What an asshole.

Emmett Flatus said:

+1 on the asshole thing.

I like that one of the signs ScottJ said he saw and liked was "Phillip Fulmer Ate My Other Sign." Um, wasn't Vandy playing Auburn? I'm no UT fan, but isn't it fairly pathetic to resort to that level of insult toward a team you're not even playing? You'd think with being so smart and having such a good season you'd finally be over your little inferiority complex.

ScottJ said:

And in what way would Vanderbilt be "inferior" to UTennessee? With the wheels falling off their massively corrupt football program, I can't think of anything. But please do regale me with the classic mouth-breather argument "I could've gertten into Vanderbuilt, but I decided to save me the tuittion money, that makes me smrt"... Love that one.

P.S. "UT" is in Austin, Texas.

Rick and Bubba are two radio personalities from Birmingham, but their syndicated show airs here in the morning on one of the local stations. They have an ongoing challenge to listeners to show up at any televised event with a Rick and Bubba sign and give a "shout out". I see them everywhere, even some of the presidential campaign speeches in other parts of the country, PGA tournaments, and a Titans telecast or two. They are not Auburn fans...I suspect from listening to them they bleed crimson.

And here I thought 3.14 was some kind of reference to the guy with the rainbow hair.

Emmett Flatus said:

You are closer on that one Pinko than you usually are.

mr. pink said:

Thanks! And you're definitely +1 on the asshole thing.

Emmett Flatus said:

Pinko...You are obviously confusing me with that image you see in the mirror.
