Ralph Stanley for Obama
Who says rednecks won't vote for Barack Obama? In this radio ad running in Southwest Virginia, bluegrass great Ralph Stanley, who's about as red as they come, gives his endorsement. “I think I know a little something about the families around here,” Stanley says. “We all need a change.”
Virginia is one of those states that John McCain ought to be winning, but it's a tossup. The candidates are spending $300,000 a day on TV there. Obama is even making gains in rural parts of the state, and that's where Stanley comes in. He's so popular in the sticks that you see pickups with bumper stickers proclaiming "Ralph Stanley for President!"

Mr. Stanley is the reason I play music. I am hurt and appaled that he would endorse a black man. I will burn all his CD's today. Idiot.
Posted 10/08/2008 at 05:40:41 AMYou do realize that Ralph Stanley supports Democratic candidates often, right? Not "as red as they come," to say the least.
And to respond to the previous comment, why are you upset that Ralph endorsed a black man? What does that have to do with anything? Maybe Ralph realizes that his primary musical instrument (with the exception of his voice), the banjo, actually came from Africa and appreciates Appalachian cultural connections with all kinds of people--yeah, the ones with a little bit of color included!.
