More Police Work Like This, Please

One (allegedly) bad dude

Last month I wrote that police resources could probably be used for better stuff than busting the stores that sell crack pipes. Now, in the very same neighborhood where that half-baked sting operation went down, Metro cops have eliminated a real threat to community safety.

Meet Finis Lewis. He’s got a rap sheet from here to Decatur for crimes ranging from assault to crack dealing with plenty of criminal action in between. Last August he shotgunned Corey Lanier down on a North Nashville street, shooting Lanier “several times,” including at least once after Lanier had already hit the ground, according to cops. Lanier survived the attack but has been laid up in the hospital ever since.

On Wednesday, a search of the J.C. Napier apartment where Lewis was holed up netted the discovery of an “assault-type rifle” hidden in a washing machine and a semi-automatic pistol “hidden in a child’s room.” Pills, cash, scales and ammo were also stashed in the apartment.

As cops carted Lewis off, “neighborhood residents actually thanked police and cheered.” They cheered! For police! Funny, but I don’t think anyone so much as offered a golf clap when they shut down the only place to buy milk, beer and cigs in the neighborhood. Take out a real thug, however, and neighbors will give a standing O. Something for Chief Serpas to consider when he’s laying out police initiatives for the new year.
