Why Does Nashville Hate Cabbies?
What do you people have against cab drivers? This story -- oddly posted by The Tennessean as a “latest headline” when it originally ran in March -- reminds me of how much trash-talking I’ve heard about cabbies in this town. It's about how the taxi commission is complaining that Metro cabbies don’t speak English well enough or properly kowtow to drunken conventioneers and CMA sleaze from LA.
Here’s a news flash, Walter Cronkite: Taxi driving is a dangerous, low wage proposition. That’s why some cabbies have banded together, threatened strikes and tried to organize. Hell, we’re lucky to have taxis at all given that there are hardly any sidewalks and the MTA keeps cutting bus service.
I know, I know. These swarthy, accented chauffeurs are all closet terrorists who will run you down the first time you bad mouth Allah. But seriously, can you get into a drunken, early-morning argument about religion with anyoneand expect things to end well?
Every cabbie I’ve talked to — and there have been many — works 12-hour-days, pays a huge monthly nut to the cab company and can barley make ends meet. There’s a reason that newly arrived immigrants do this work: It sucks. So please, Nashville, give these guys a break already.

To most Southeners, cabs are just an anomaly. You just ask family or friends to take you or have your own car. Long term parking at the airport is cheaper than a cab. The imports, tourists and college age kids from the North, know about calling a cab after you've had too much to drink. Otherwise, I wonder who uses them? More maybe when they figure it's cheaper than owning a car. But that's pretty sophistcated math and not something that will happen here quickly.

He lives at a country club, flies airplanes for cancer patients, makes hay, coaches little league baseball, started a bank, an IT firm, a construction company, donates money to many Nashville charities, hangs with President Bush and is a big family man.
Being succesful brings out the haters. Keep the hate going. I love it!!!!!!!!!!!
