Ronnie Steine's Resolution: Best. Litmus. Test. Ever
OK, so we can disagree on the supposed wisdom of the May Town Center or whether a biz pig lobbyist can fashion himself a Democrat. We can even argue about whether all we (I?) do here at Pith is air petty gripes. Fine.
But Eric Crafton’s “English First” measure is unquestionably toxic, mean-spirited and stupid. It’s the 2008 version of a Poll Tax. To criticize it any more is to waste your time and mine.
We’re lucky that our new roster of Metro Council members overwhelmingly voted in favor of Ronnie Steine’s well-timed resolution opposing Crafton’s proposal. Meanwhile, our mayor, Karl Dean, who we criticize a bit for never voicing a substantive opinion, gave a smart and moving speech against the anti-immigrant measure as well.
But what about the eight council members who voted against Steine and with Crafton—and the two that abstained?
Well, ladies and gentlemen, here they are, the 10 worst council members in Nashville:
Voting against Steine:
Michael Craddock
Karen Bennett
Jim Gotto
Phil Claiborne
Buddy Baker
Eric Crafton
Robert Duvall
Duane Dominy
Too cowardly to vote:
Randy Foster
Vivian Wilhoite

My CM is one of the 10. And I voted for her.
*facepalm*
Posted 08/08/2008 at 03:38:10 PMBoy, is that headline ever true. The wheat and chaff, depending on your point of view, have definitely been separated.
I don't understand abstaining on this one at all. Either you favor this or you don't.
Posted 08/08/2008 at 04:58:30 PMAfter railing on you for weeks now, I just wanted to thank you for your well reasoned and insightful post. This was a big suck-up to East Nashville, wasn't it??
Posted 08/08/2008 at 05:51:59 PMWow, a little bit surprised by Wilhoite's vote. Very disappointing

I hate to go all ad hominem, but what would really improve Nashville's image would be if voters stopped putting people like Ronnie Steine into office. For those who have forgotten, this man stuffed football trading cards into his underwear at a local retail store and was arrested and convicted. It was not his first theft, as this publication pointed out.
This has nothing to do with the merits of his proposal, which were on point, but when Steine acts as the messenger it represents another disgrace to the city as a whole. The fact Steine sits on the council is a larger disgrace than any anti-immigrant referendum.
Posted 08/11/2008 at 12:31:27 PMSo what if the council is a bunch of cowards? The vote for it should have been in November except for the fact that we're voting 2 calendar days earlier than 2 years ago.
Now the vote will be in January and the people of this area will make the decision. Mean or not, it's going to be reality in Nashville.
People are sick and tired of our government coddling people who are here illegally while real citizens have to wait in line behind them.
