This week we highlighted Lauren Wilson’s account of life inside the Cannon home. Wilson spent two months with Jim, his wife Kelley, and their three kids before he was found murdered in an upstairs closet.

As is true for most stories, there were some things left on the cutting room floor due to space considerations. Much of this was extraneous, including conversations with other people who’d worked in the Cannon home and could verify Wilson’s account.

But one detail stuck with us...

Jennifer Schwan, a friend of Wilson’s, worked for a week in the Cannon home as the night shift nanny. Schwan would arrive in the afternoon and work alongside Wilson and another housekeeper for an hour before Jim came home.

On one of those nights, Jim told Schwan and the housekeeper about one of Kelley’s outbursts. He said he’d come home to find her in a rage, accusing him of having an affair. Kelley thought Jim was sneaking phone calls to another woman, so to punish him she decided to rip out all the phone cords in their West End home. Strangely enough, this was similar to a story Kelley told us in an earlier interview, although in her version it was Jim doing the damage.

We first heard this story prior to testimony from the Metro PD detective assigned to the case. There was still no official word on what had been used to strangle Jim. So you can imagine what it might have felt like to hear that the murder weapon was the electrical cord of a phone adapter.
