Why Does the GOP Hate Mothers?

Only in Washington. For those who weren't aware, three of Tennessee's U.S. House members voted against motherhood this weekâincluding one member with ovaries, Rep. Marsha Blackburn. (John Duncan and Zach Wamp cast the other two votes.) From the Washington Post's Dana Milbank today on this staggering floor vote:
On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, "Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day," when Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), rose in protest."Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote," he announced.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table Tiahrt's request, setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast their votes against mothers.
Just in time for Mother's Day. Asses.

Wasn't that all part of some snit fit designed to gum up the works, out of anger that Republicans hadn't been consulted on some piece of legislation?
Posted 05/09/2008 at 04:26:11 PMLiz, she did vote for it before she voted against it.
Posted 05/09/2008 at 04:26:33 PMYes, they've been pulling parliamentary garbage all week, but it's still kind of vile. And you're right, Christian, she now shares a kinship with John Kerry, as she did indeed vote for it before she voted against it.
Posted 05/09/2008 at 04:30:19 PMin typical legislative fashion, there must have been something else hinky tacked on to the bill.
Posted 05/09/2008 at 04:31:58 PMNope. It was just a resolution.
Posted 05/09/2008 at 04:34:40 PMMaybe they are on the "ban-all-pointless-holidays" bandwagon with me. I'm not a fan of Mother's Day myself.
P.S. Yes, I AM a mother and I love my kids. No haters, please.
Posted 05/10/2008 at 07:11:31 AMInteresting: if you google history of Mother's Day and read the Wikipedia entry, you find that Mother's Day in the USA was started as an anti-war day after the Civil War and then Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday honoring sons who had died in WWI. Sounds like a good holiday if it's anti-war. OF course, as you read further, you discover it's been hijacked by commercialism, but what holiday hasn't?!
Posted 05/10/2008 at 09:10:57 AMSince Blackburn wants to be called Congressman, seems only correct that he should be referred to as "he" instead of "she". He's a mother himself, but yet he votes against Mother's Day.
