Rethink Those Quote Marks

There are friends and colleagues I respect a great deal working on the new/old enterprise at The City Paper. Many of them—hell, most of them—are much smarter than I, but a word of advice about an unfortunate pair of quote marks on today's cover: When describing NashvilleCityPaper.com as a destination for "Daily" Local News, the quote marks connote that a) either someone else says so or b) that's what you're calling it, but it's not really true. It's as if to say, "Pssst, we're saying it's daily, but it's not really."
Anyway, the grammar nerd could not help herself.
Hugs and commas,
Liz

Yep. You've got to be careful with quote marks.
Nudge. Nudge.
Posted 05/05/2008 at 12:41:00 PMPITW should re-think all the white space that is so often(like today)on this blog.
Posted 05/05/2008 at 12:51:48 PMI wasn't going to raise this, but since LG did post on today's CP front: What's the deal with wrapping today's paper inside the same publisher's letter they ran last Monday, saying that "beginning with today's paper, we will reduce the frequency of the print product....Today's paper is the first step in our evolution..." So last week was a dry run? Today is the real first day of the evolution? C'mon, CP, that's the kind of careless inattention to detail we have come to expect from 1100 Broadway; we know you can do better.
Posted 05/05/2008 at 01:26:55 PMLiz, I had the very same thought about the quotes this morning when I saw the paper. It definitely sends the wrong message.
Posted 05/05/2008 at 04:35:21 PMThey have great political coverage thanks to Brewer. Many of their writers leave a lot to be desired, though.
Posted 05/05/2008 at 04:53:08 PMI noticed the quotation marks also, and my thought was "daily", but not really.
