Confabulation on the Left

Progressives statewide will gather Friday and Saturday for the Tennessee Alliance for Progress’s fifth annual Compass conference in Nashville. The Friday highlight is a celebration and awards ceremony featuring celebrity populist Jim Hightower. Saturday brings a morning keynote by former Mayor Bill Purcell, and a bunch o’ panels on social justice, the environment, workers' rights, globalization and more. A closing keynote late Saturday tackles “Hip-Hop as a Force for Community Empowerment.”
The full scoop here. I’ll be a panelist Saturday on the topic “Government as an Agent for the Common Good.” (This one’s for you, Gilbert M.)

Hip Hop as a force for community empowerment?
Posted 05/13/2008 at 11:49:40 AMWho is Mr Eric Brown anyway?
Eric Brown is a recent graduate of American Baptist College (renowned for its role in the lunch counter sit-ins in Nashville -- alumni include Bernard Lafayette and C.T. Vivien). He is also a dynamite young organizer and leader. He and his peers feel hip-hop can be used to mobilize young people to get active on the issues facing their communities, such as the high drop out rate and the cradle to prison pipeline. Eric will be going to Vanderbilt Divinity School in the Fall.

No thanks.
I can think of better things to do on Saturday than attend a leftist gabfest.
The only thing that could possibly be of interest would be seeing if anyone there came up with a new euphemism for socialism. I've heard all the standard ones already: "progressive", "social justice", "economic justice", "common good", etc. etc.
It's all merely a rationalization for liberals incessent desire to control and spend other people's money, make other people's decisions for them and set everyone else's priorities in life.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 11:55:36 AMRight you are, GM. So let me suggest that you stop what you are doing, send a nice hefty check off to the ACLU, go for the chicken for lunch today, and apply to medical school.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 12:03:00 PMMedical school?
Sorry but doctors don't make enough money.
Hedge fund manager is the way to go.

Uh-huh.
Whereas libertarians like to acquire other people's money and then say, "Fuck you."
Posted 05/14/2008 at 12:22:55 PMThe money I have acquired isn't "other people's" - it's mine.
It's called private property rights.

You cannot prove that it is.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 12:49:21 PMCommies! Nothing but a bunch of damn commies!
Posted 05/14/2008 at 01:01:08 PM"You cannot prove that it is."
LOL
Of course I can.
I have legal title to it.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 01:06:13 PM"Legal title"? Private property "rights"?
You disappoint me, Gilbert.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 01:30:34 PMDid I say "Gilbert"? I meant "Anonymous."
Thanks for proving my point, though. It's the only thing you're capable of proving.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 01:33:49 PM"You disappoint me, Gilbert."
So what?
"Thanks for proving my point, though."
You didn't have any point to prove.
Other than the fact that you have a deficient grasp of the concept of ownership.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 01:47:05 PMWhat's deficient, Gilbert Martin, is your ability to prove that your beloved property "rights" are anything more than a system designed by those with money to protect their money from those without.
(I'm sure you'd never call the police if someone broke into your house.)
Posted 05/14/2008 at 02:10:49 PMAttention everyone: feel free to stop by Comrade TJ's house and help yourself to anything you like - furniture, cash, electronics. Since he doesn't believe in property rights, he'll have no grounds to object to anyone carting off anything they happen to want.
Posted 05/14/2008 at 09:19:03 PMActually, you all should go to Gilbert's house and start carting stuff away. Then see if he doesn't spend your money by calling in the big bad government to protect his precious baubles.
Posted 05/15/2008 at 09:15:39 AMCome on over and find out if I need to call the cops, TJ.
Wear a t-shirt with a bullseye on the front so it'll be easier for me to group my shots.
Of course private property rights exist whether the police happen to assist in protecting them in any particular instance or not.
Furthermore, if they did assist, I wouldn't be spending anybody else's money since I pay property taxes and police protection is one of the services I'm paying for.
What you cannot do is come up with any legitimate reason why those without money have any sort of claim on the cash of those who do in the first place.
Posted 05/15/2008 at 12:13:23 PMOh, how your threats do frighten me so, GM. Even assuming that between your marksmanship and your wit the former is the greater of the two (which wouldn't be much of an accomplishment) I wouldn't have much to worry about.
What you cannot do is come up with any legitimate reason why those without money have any sort of claim on the cash of those who do in the first place.
Never said that they do. Now you go run off and try some target practice on your little straw man.
Posted 05/15/2008 at 01:12:17 PMTJ, you are a fool. GM did not threaten you.
Did you not say, "...is your ability to prove that your beloved property "rights" are anything more than a system designed by those with money to protect their money from those without."
Perhaps you feel entitled to a bit of GM's money or property?

Posted 05/15/2008 at 06:24:55 PMI love it.
Words like "Progressives" and "populist" to describe good, old fashioned Liberals. It's almost like the 'L' word is not P.C. anymore and is actually a cuss word!
My... my.
Then, when you thought it couldn't get any better:
“Hip-Hop as a Force for Community Empowerment.”
Are you f****** kidding?!? Ha, ha, ha, ha! What about "Toothless, dirty skateboarders who spin insanely on their skateboards like poisoned aquarium fish as a Force for Community Empowerment?"
Should be just as entertaining and just as useless!
Posted 05/15/2008 at 07:15:13 PMROFLMAO.
I honestly don't know what's funnier, Boyd or Gilbert's attack wiener-dog baring his little teeth.
Posted 05/15/2008 at 09:05:11 PM"Oh, how your threats do frighten me so, GM."
Threats?
I wasn't making a threat - I was making a point in response to your continued yapping about calling the police.
The point being, of course, that I need no help from the police to deal with the likes of you.
And that is no threat - it's an absolute fact.
"I wouldn't have much to worry about."
I won't hold my breath waiting for you to show up and find out.
"Never said that they do. Now you go run off and try some target practice on your little straw man."
The only straw man here is your yappng about calling the police - which has nothing to do with proving anything about property rights.
By admitting you can't prove those without money have any claim on those that do, you have proven your own previously stated claim to be false.
Property rights are a system designed to keep people who have no legitimate claim on property from stealing it from those who do. They are NOT merely "a system designed by those with money to protect their money from those without".
Case closed.
Posted 05/15/2008 at 09:32:18 PMTJ Laser has thrown this board into hysterics. Gilbert's talking in circles, john's running in circles trying to defend him, and Jim Boyd, oh my!
Jim's got a point, though. Let's call a spade a spade! It's almost as bad as these white supremacists running around calling themselves "patriots" and "conservatives."
