Random Tuesday Thoughts
Why does The Tennessean have a reporter in Tampa covering the UT Lady Vols in the women's national championship game but didn't have anyone in San Antonio writing about Memphis' appearance in the men's title game?
What Nashville Democratic candidate for Senate drives a red Saab convertible with a vanity plate that reads “Oarsman?” Might he be vulnerable to some version of this ad?
When will the school board finally hire a superintendent? Or, first things first, when will the school board hire a search firm so that it can hire a superintendent?
Since school board member David Fox recommended that Mayor Karl Dean disband the school board, what exactly have its members done to prove their worth?
What Metro Council member will have a mea culpa on the Scene's letters page tomorrow following this story?

Hey Pulle, what kind of car do YOU drive? What color is it? What's the license plate number?
Posted 04/08/2008 at 01:05:06 PMNot a Saab, that much I can tell you.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 01:17:08 PMWhat other personal information do you plan to reveal about Tuke simply because he won't talk to you? Do you consider this to be a good journalistic method?
Posted 04/08/2008 at 01:25:38 PMMarvin, we just disagree here on what counts as personal information. I don't think the type of car you drive and your state-issued vanity plate qualifies as such. Besides, Bob Tuke (whoops) is, at least in theory, a public figure.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 04:21:12 PMNot a question of personal information. It's a question of relevance and newsworthiness.
"Oarsman" suggests he rows a boat, not that he sails one like the effete JFKerry.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 05:27:57 PMWhat Nashville Democratic candidate for Senate drives a red Saab convertible with a vanity plate that reads “Oarsman?”
Unless Tuke's plate includes the question mark, you should follow the rule below. I'm shocked that Liz, who has flawless punctuation, tolerates such sloppiness!
The placement of question marks with quotes follows logic. If a question is in quotation marks, the question mark should be placed inside the quotation marks.
Examples: She asked, "Will you still be my friend?"
Do you agree with the saying, "All's fair in love and war"?
Here the question is outside the quote.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 05:34:51 PMWll if Tuke drives a Saab, that is a problem in more ways than one.
Surely someone knows what Pulle drives and should post it right here. What if it is a big BMW? I don't know how that would go down with the worms posting here.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 06:03:33 PMI drive a red Volkswagen Cabriolet with an "ERACISM" bumper sticker.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 07:23:58 PMThis obsession with cars must be a guy thing.
Posted 04/08/2008 at 07:29:10 PMPulle, I notice you didn't give your state-issued license plate number, which is - in your view - non-personal information.
On the tactical side, do you think this will help in your efforts to get Tuke to talk to you? Or have you given up on that completely and are now just concentrating on vindictiveness?
Posted 04/09/2008 at 09:45:37 AM...You have something against Saabs?
I think you're just jealous that this guy has a real convertible while you're stuck in a VW Cab.
Driving a Saab doesn't say "I have too much money", it says "I know how to spend my money."
Posted 04/09/2008 at 10:52:10 AMMarvin, when I run for Senate, you'll be the first to know.
Oh--and I don't have a Volkswagen Cab with an "Eracism" bumper sticker. Even by my standards, that would be pretty lame.
Posted 04/09/2008 at 11:14:33 AMI'm not sure what the accepted standards are in regards to whether or not the public has a right to know the car and license plate of any person running for public office. The more important question is the motive of the "journalist" who chooses to reveal that information. Was it revealed in the course of a legitimate journalistic pursuit, or because the "journalist" was in a snit and being vindictive?
Posted 04/09/2008 at 12:30:19 PMMarvin, you're reading a blog. Lighten up. This all started when Tuke, who is running as a Democrat, repeatedly dodged a question about a very Republican judicial nominee who is being opposed by a coalition of left-leaning groups. Tuke was hoping to get out of saying anything because this nominee is a friend of his. That to me was amusing and deserving of a little mockery and ridicule.
Posted 04/09/2008 at 12:39:29 PMSo, your journalistic ethics - such as they may be - go out the window when you're writing on a blog. Pulle the blogger is free to be as irresponsible as he wishes. Got it.

Posted 04/09/2008 at 01:05:57 PMLetterman is funny. The Onion is funny. Breasted editors are sometimes even funny (probably more so after a few drinks at a bar near The Arcade). Irresponsible journalists and their bosses who make excuses for them - not so much.
Oh, and how exactly does talking about Tuke's car mock and ridicule his refusal to comment on Puryear? Never mind, I doubt it matters.
