Briley Bows Out
State Rep. Rob Briley’s decision not to run for reelection throws open the campaign to all comers. Already running are attorneys Eric Stansell and Mike Stewart, now the clear favorite to win. Briley announced his decision only this afternoon in the Nashville Post, but already there’s speculation that more candidates are likely.
Metro Council member Erik Cole, who was seriously considering the race at one time but decided against it, tells the Scene he won’t change his mind now that Briley, an East Nashville Democrat, isn’t running.
Others who had been thinking about running include former council member Jeff Ockerman and longtime Metro insider Billy Fields. Ockerman seems unlikely to run because he’s just taken a new job as director of health planning for the state.
As for Briley, who is fighting alcoholism, friends say they’re relieved he’s giving up his seat. “It’s the best decision he’s made for his health,” one says.
Here's a nice roundup of the Briley saga at Volunteer Voters.
