Unhinged Realtor of the Week
This morning’s Tennessean story about Metro Council’s approval of a new height restriction for residential construction quotes real estate broker Barbara Browning, who lives in the Love Circle neighborhood where country singer John Rich plans to build his monument to excess:
"It's the people who are down below who live in little cottages that seem to have a problem with it…I really don't want anybody telling me what I can and cannot build on my lot."
Browning, one assumes, opposes all zoning laws. Browning, one hopes, will find the owner of the lot next door to hers seeking a variance to build a convenience store, or maybe an adult bookstore. Browning, one eagerly anticipates, will appear cheerfully on that owner’s behalf down at the Metro Planning Commission.

I couldn't believe her comment about those "little cottages" down below. I seriously almost spit out my coffee when I read that.
Posted 06/20/2007 at 03:37:42 PMWhat selfish bastards we are here down below. How dare we try to deny a rich country star any damn thing he wants.
Posted 06/20/2007 at 09:50:20 PMBy the way, the "little cottage" two doors down from me is selling for almost $400,000 (obviously, I rent in this neighborhood).
Posted 06/21/2007 at 10:07:26 AMI don't like anyone telling me what I can and cannot build on my own property, either. But at the same time, SOME restrictions are necessary to prevent stupid stuff from happening, like those cited above.
Posted 06/21/2007 at 10:31:32 AMThere are also some really really stupid and micro-managing residential zoning restrictions, though.
If Mr. Rich has followed the law set forth in front of him, THEN JUST SHUT UP.
Posted 06/21/2007 at 07:41:58 PMIf he wants to live in this area and he has the funds to build a very large home, what business is that of yours. We can't pick our neighbors folks, or I would have mine ejected. If you don't like your new neighbor, then move.
And the "monument to excess" line is also foolish. If many of you had the same resources as John Rich, chances are you would be doing several things others consider excessive.
Leave the guy alone. And I don't even know him or like country music, so please save your reply about that.
MYOB is right. After my next paycheck, I can FINALLY afford to put in that 50 foot statue of a naked Pamela Anderson.
Posted 06/22/2007 at 09:24:33 AMBesides, you will get used to the neon lights after a while.
And don't even come knocking at my door after I erect a life-size monument to KISS right smack in the middle of my front lawn. It's not my problem if your kids are scared.
Posted 06/22/2007 at 12:15:35 PMFirst it was the down-zoning of duplex to single family, now it's the height restriction that, by the way, encompasses the whole county. I agree with MYOB,folks. Leave the guy alone. He stares at highrises for heaven's sake. And is surrounded by a myriad of different types of dwellings including condos & cottages. Let him build what he wants. He followed the rules that were in place. Everyone can live peacefully together. And if they don't like it they can move to a place where nothing ever changes.
