Bach and Bobble

Posted April 30, 2008 at 02:45:26 PM by Tracy Moore

It has been brought to my attention that a collection of great composer bobbleheads exists featuring Bach, Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven. A novel idea, and yet, my mind went to work looking for the punchline. Alas, the only thing that I could think of involves the kind of "movement" this inspires. So what's the punchline, Cream readers?

Whether an artist needs a little music writing inspiration, an instructor desires a fitting gift for students, or an enthusiast wants to display four icons alongside a valued music collection, the Great Composer Bobblehead series by Holland Arts & Studio Inc. of Colorado no doubt fit the bill.

Footloose: New Pornographers Are Neko-less for Tonight's Show & More

Posted April 18, 2008 at 01:58:19 PM by Tracy Moore

From Pitchfork:

According to a missive from the band itself, "Neko had a really bad fall in Washington, DC, which resulted in a fractured ankle (which also did some damage to her ligaments), and will be leaving the tour today. She was really trying to be a trooper and stayed on as long as she could through Richmond and Athens, but it has gotten to the point where she must return home to have her ankle taken care of and to recuperate. She's very upset about having to leave. It's been super fun having her on tour and around again, but she just had to go to avoid doing some real permanent damage to herself.

"We hope that you understand, Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, Madison, and Cleveland."

Smells Like a Re-Open: 12th & Porter's Back On

Posted April 07, 2008 at 02:04:26 PM by Tracy Moore

Since Autumn Addict dude Justin Roddick took 12th & P. over in November, it's apparently been revamped and renovated. The City Paper's Ron Wynn spoke to Roddick recently about the changes, which include videotaping and recording some shows and producing press kits for bands. If you check out the current bookings, it doesn't seem to have ventured from the showcases and singer-songwriters the club's been known for the past several years. However, this Friday night grungefest show flyer caught our eye.

So put on your wack slacks, don some fuzz and hopefully, we'll see you swingin' on the flippity-flop, lamestains.

Elvis-SoldOut1976.jpg

Sorry folks, but those Raconteurs tickets moved pretty fast. By my calculations, tix for both nights—April 14 and 15—sold out in about 30 minutes. Who got 'em?

The answer is out there.

I've Been Saving This for a Slow News Day

Posted March 05, 2008 at 03:13:56 PM by Sean Maloney

Did you know that Nashville has a hipster yo-yo team? It's kinda weird, like competitive calvinball, unicycle hockey or handfishing. I just figured you'd want to know. I'm gonna get back to looking at LOLCat pictures now....

Tupelo Money

Posted January 25, 2008 at 02:11:36 PM by Jack Silverman

I love me some Van Morrison, but $130 for the cheapest seats?!

Surely it will sell out, and the law of supply and demand would thusly justify the price. (Tickets go as high as $250, and, yes, I just used the word "thusly"—deal with it.) Still, we saw his last Ryman show, and while it was good, I don't know that it was $130-good.

At that price, he better at least say something to the crowd this time.

From the Archives: A Decade After Lucy's

Posted January 22, 2008 at 11:06:31 AM by Tracy Moore

Lucyslogo.gif

After traipsing through some archived pages of the old Scene website, I came across Jim Ridley's piece on the closing of Lucy's Record Shop, which actually happened a decade ago this month—Jan. 31, 1998. It's a great piece that captures what I tried to capture in writing about Nashville's seminal punk scene—the innately transitory nature of any movement, particularly any youth-oriented movement. (Note: I couldn't get the archived site's pictures to load.)

Slightly more than five years ago, Mary Mancini, a transplanted New Yorker turned record-store owner, formed an alliance with two young veterans of the local rock scene, Donnie and April Kendall. They banded together out of a common love of underground rock 'n' roll and a respect for its principles. Working in tandem, they established Nashville as a link in a nationwide underground that heralded coming movements in music, fashion, and thought. Now they're older. They have husbands and babies and ambitions apart from music. Some of them want new careers. Others want to get away from Lucy's just to remember what music feels like as a release, not as a job. These are all sound reasons-but they're also reasons that Lucy's teenage clientele have a hard time sympathizing with.

Phish & Olives

No, it’s not the latest diet fad. When the Scene spoke with Jon Fishman about his upcoming appearance at the Del McCoury Band New Year’s Eve show at the Ryman, the Phish drummer shared this particularly poignant memory from his early days in a frat-house band. It's a story you won't want to miss, though you'll never look at an olive the same way again.

Jon Fishman's olive story, after the jump...
