We Fun

Posted March 27, 2008 at 12:10:20 PM by Steve Haruch

Since Snowden seem pretty committed to never playing here again, I figure this is about as close as I'm going to get. From the good people, some of whom call Nashville home, who brought you Silver Jew, LMNO and Athens, GA: Inside Out, it's a snappy trailer for We Fun: Atlanta, GA Inside Out. 3, 5, 0, 1, 2, 5, GO!

Posted March 07, 2008 at 10:46:56 AM by Matt Sullivan

Control is screening at the Belcourt until next Thursday. Mr. Maloney and myself went and saw it last Tuesday. Anton Corbijn directed it (the same guy who directed the video for "Atmosphere"). It looks amazing but still falls into the some of the same traps that snare a lot of biopics (read: brief bouts of cliché sentimentality). There are a couple of cheesy moments, like this exchange:

"When you say things like that it makes me think that you don't love me anymore."
"I don't think that I do."
Cue "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

If you've seen 24 Hour Party People or read Touching From a Distance, you probably won't gain any new insight into the inner workings of Joy Division, but you'll probably feel obligated to see the movie all the same. The tortured artist angle wasn't overplayed, which was a relief. There's a funny slam on The Fall's Mark E. Smith. The actor who played Bernard Albrecht did an excellent job mimicking the guitarist's butchered technique. The concert scenes seemed to be performed by the actors themselves, so the songs don't sound exactly right. But then again, if the actors were able to sound exactly like Joy Division there wouldn't be much point in making a movie.

Theme Music Smackdown #1

Posted February 08, 2008 at 05:00:04 PM by Jim Ridley

In honor of the awesome The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, screening tomorrow night and Sunday at the Belcourt as part of the amazing Nashville Film Noir Festival, here is some of the most badass theme music ever concocted, courtesy of composer David Shire. No wonder the Beastie Boys name-checked it in "Sure Shot."

The movie's killer, by the way. The writer introducing it tomorrow night, Craig R. Lindsey, loves it so much he asked the Belcourt if he could drive down from Raleigh/Durham, N.C., to do the honors.

(Not) in Love With the Modern World

Posted January 16, 2008 at 03:34:46 PM by Steve Haruch

No matter your opinion of De Novo Dahl, you'll likely find the response to their introduction video amusing.

The video, posted on YouTube by Roadrunner Records, has drawn fire from viewers, many of them metal fans confused—and more often, offended—by DND's presence on an erstwhile metal label. (Normally, we'd just embed the video, but in this case, the context is half the show.)

The comments, like this one by a user named "lmd141," by and large riff on the same theme: "[W]hat you have to understand is that people who love roadrunner becauase of bands like cradle of filth and machine head are not going to all of a sudden accept that a pop band is on their favourite label. Surely all the comments give you that idea."

Or, as user "paracocci" puts it more succinctly: "[W]hat the fck.. this is gay!"

Elvin J. to Todd S.: Bite Me

Posted January 09, 2008 at 01:49:10 PM by Jim Ridley

"Drum solos longer than 8 bars that aren't done by Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Quest Love, or Animal...are stupid." So says a commenter below. Here, as a rebuttal witness, is Elvin Jones in a clip from the bizarre 1971 head Western Zachariah. Tell me if this guy isn't the baddest gunslinger you've ever seen.

Don't Bogart the Pneumatic Drum Head Tensioner, Dude

Posted January 07, 2008 at 12:29:06 PM by Steve Haruch

The drummer from H-Beam has "complicated drumming technique" pretty much mastered. But he also blows. Or maybe he sucks. Kinda hard to tell from the video. His bandmate gets a piece of the action, too.

Thoughts of Yesterday

Posted January 04, 2008 at 08:29:59 AM by Steve Haruch

This Sex Machinegun song is apparently about a volcano, so you know what that means. Recommended if you find awesome: songs about volcanoes, unison head-banging, synchronized guitar moves, matching outfits, feet up on monitors, heavy metal, Bruce Dickinson's voice and finger-tapping. Yes you do.

So, this one is tagged as Nashville, but I'm not sure if it was recorded here, the singer was from here or just that the person who posted it found the single here. Anyway, I like synth pop as much as the next guy, so I was optimistic at the outset, hoping for a little Strawberry Switchblade-like sad bubblegum. Oh well. The hook's not bad, though the guitar sound certainly is.

Cox Rocks

Posted December 12, 2007 at 11:25:00 AM by Brent Rolen

Last Saturday, John C. Reilly was in town to promote Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. After a screening of the movie in Green Hills, Reilly rocked the Mercy Lounge in character as part of his Cox Across America tour. After the jump, you'll find several videos from his performance with the Hard Walkers. More footage of the show can be found on Pith in the Wind and in this week's The Spin, where you can also read about the show.
