School of Rock: YEAH's Rock Blok 2010 Registration Open Today
Sure, bands are supposed to be these enigmatic, happenstance formations that only come to fruition because the stars happened to align just right that day in fourth period shop class when you discovered your bud loves Testament as much as you. But you could save yourself the heartache and go hang out with a bunch of like-minded kids, find your creative equals, and, most importantly, discover a vocalist you don't have to let be in your band just because (s)he has a P.A.![]()
As we've told you before, Murfreesboro's Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities group (YEAH) is a safe place in the Boro for kids to hang out and plug in to music, art, photography, filmmaking and more. They kicked off their new program Rock Blok in early 2009 and registration for 2010 opens today. For $40 a month (no contracts--this ain't a cellphone plan), you can be paired up with other aspiring musicians at your ability level, get set up with a band manager, record, make merch, play shows and proceed to engage in all the weird, awesome, dysfunctional creative struggles that come with tying your hopes and dreams to three to four other people of varying degrees of sanity. You could find the Anton Newcombe to your own Courtney Taylor. And, all in the sort of place your parents would totally feel cool dropping you off. I know (or at least I would think) the Cream readership is way more grizzled than age 17, so please, pass this along to anyone with kids aged 10-17 and a desire to channel varying degrees of creativity and/or angst. Registration closes Dec. 10. Could be a kool Khristmas present for a kool kid.
