You know what's better than seeing Richard Lloyd cover Hendrix songs? Seeing Richard Lloyd cover Hendrix songs with Danny motherfuckin' Tamberelli on bass!

As soon as we walked into The 5 Spot last night, that's all anyone could talk about. Little Pete was in the house, and he was ready to rock. It was basically a perfect storm of generational kismet. Kids who liked Pete & Pete probably grew up to like Television, and now they're all of drinking age. We noticed Joe Blankenship pretty much had the conversation nailed down with the KrebStar, and we can only assume they were talking about their shared experiences in the world of child acting.

Frankly, Jimi Hendrix is not this Spinner's bag and two shits could not be given about hearing "Purple Haze" for the ten thousandth fucking time. "See No Evil" and "Friction" were done and that was pretty cool, but come on. Motherfucking Little Pete. Dude is winning at life so much harder than all of you right now. Weird.

Lloyd's chops were there, but shaky at times. he'd have benefited greatly from some fuzz, overdrive, distortion, etc to add some sustain and generally glue those notes together better and gloss over the inevitable flaws from playing with such a clean tone.

his solo material ranged from pretty catchy to pretty damn bad and the Hendrix covers weren't especially impressive or inventive.

overall, it was such a startlingly novel combination of one of the greatest bands ever and one of the greatest tv shows ever that it couldn't be missed.

And The Relatives sound like a lot of bands I liked in 1995. What sets these guys apart from such hipster reunion circuit acts as Pavement, Archers of Loaf and Shudder to Think? I say it's their refusal to have an ounce of personality or even one song that isn't rife with dundering predictability. A winning combination, I say! These guys should go far once they devise a plan to destroy the other 149 bands just like this in every mid-size market in the United States.

Richard Lloyd is nuts. I mean, he's not well, mentally. I think this is acknowledged by lots of people. He's a fantastic Strat player with great ideas, but he appears rusty here. For some reason, that doesn't make me enjoy this set any less. His band is killer, his spirit is there, his tone is killer (and although I hear you on the drive/sustain issue, I kinda think it's cool what an unheroic light this approach casts the GUITAR SOLO in). The Television stuff falls flat, and it looks like he didn't bother to relearn the solo to "See No Evil;" his solos on the Hendrix stuff tell me what he'd really rather be doing. As for myself, I spent Thursday night watching Richard Lloyd be Richard Lloyd on Hendrix tunes for 10 bucks. Good or bad, that's a rare opportunity I'm glad I didn't pass up to stay in and get high to WVOL.

BTW, I was the guy in the Preds jersey.
