Music That Will Make You Cream: '60s Night 8 off 8th, July 6

I'm certain that ever since we at the Cream announced our monthlong 8 off 8th series at Mercy Lounge next month, you've been on pins and needles awaiting some lineups. Well the first one is here, and we just couldn't keep you waiting any longer. July 6 is '60s night, meaning all of the following artists will be playing some of their favorite songs from the greatest decade, y'know, pretty much ever:

Matt Friction and the Cheap Shots
Roman Candle
Eureka Gold
The Clutters
Kindergarten Circus
Ole Mossy Face
Jacob Jones
Millionaire Magicians

I can tell you that some of the covers already spoken for--or at least put "on hold"--include songs by The Zombies, The Animals, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Tommy James & the Shondells, The Rolling Stones, Dion DiMucci and Roy Orbison. Also, I'm guessing there will be some Sonics in there, and I've heard whispers that Adam Gold may or may not engage in some light cross-dressing. Fingers crossed. There will be prizes, but I won't tell you what those prizes are going to be. Maybe that's because I'm secretive, and maybe it's because I actually have no idea what the prizes are going to be. And remember, all four shows are free.

Shows like this are a waste of time...

what's up with fetishizing cover bands and cover songs?

Don't Guilty Pleasures, Tyrone Smith, and Mel and the Party Hats have this market cornered?

You guys must be getting all nostalgic for those frat parties you used to love to go to...

Cover songs only serve the purpose of helping musicians learn how to play their instruments and learn song structure. Beyond that, any given cover band is trying to ride the coattails of cool of the particular band they're covering. And isn't that kind of uncool???

Just another dissenting thought...

Maybe, they should write some new songs that might begin to approach the greatness of the songs they are covering, instead of wasting their time learning a cover that is sure to pale by comparison to the original.

I'd rather see original music, free of charge, than covers, free of charge...

It's fair to dissent, but I'd disagree that covers always suck (even Dylan thinks Hendrix's "Watchtower" is better). Plus, cover song, or even cover set, does not equal cover band.

8 off 8th regularly features original performances, but this is a chance for the bands (most of which play there regularly already) to pay homage to their influences.

Nice, but let's face it, all the bands listed above and the Mercy Lounge just know that people are bored with
their music and that whole scene, so they put on this show to get people excited again.

Also, yes, playing a cover song doesn't equal being a cover band, but consider how every other week, we're hearing about some local, hip band covering their favorite songs from a movie, or some local bands are doing their favorite Ramones songs, or some local bands are covering an ELO album, or bands are covering each others songs.
Too many damned covers, when/if you think about it.

And the icing on the cake is that the most financially successful local band is Guilty Pleasures, a cover band. Those guys make more money playing covers than the combined total payout the Features got from their last 3 shows...there's something wrong here.
Audiences around here DON'T want to be challenged and neither do the bands, unless that challenge is learning a new cover song.

Well, what the???/actually, actually.../Yeah, but/here's an idea...You seem like a troubled young man who doesn't enjoy covers, nor do you seem to be particularly rapt by any of these local artists. And that's fine. You're allowed to be disinterested, and you certainly don't have to come.

With the exception of about three of those bands, I've seen everyone mentioned above play somewhere in the neighborhood of six times. I enjoy their music, but I haven't even seen the majority of my favorite national acts play that many times. I think it's going to be fun little departure from the norm, and I don't think anyone is sacrificing their artistic integrity by participating. And could you maybe stick with one log-in name? You're making it look like you're more than just one curmudgeon. Thanks for the feedback nonetheless. Feel better!

Why not a night when bands play songs in the vein of a particular artist rather than covers? It would give another prospective of the "Handpicked by Nashville Cream" bands and maybe open some doors. A scene that pushs artists to explore rather than copying the newest fly by night trends would be a scene to be proud of.
