Nice guys, talented musicians, but I can't stand their (any) pop punk.

I'd say it's more punk-pop, like Wax.

Not that I necessarily feel the need to justify any further why any of us enjoy the music of The Privates, but I'll indulge you a bit, since you mostly asked nicely.

The Privates are one of the bands that I believe suffers the most from a pretty Nashville-specific problem: They're very talented and have worked pretty hard for a long time, but outside of musicians and folks immersed in the local rock scene, they don't have much of an audience. They're a band that, based in another city (I believe), would thrive much more.

Since, as you mentioned, they all have other commitments, they aren't afforded the opportunity to tour as a group. Thus, they can't really grow their fan base outside of Nashville. And in Nashville, folks don't often go to local shows in droves.

Thus, whenever these guys do something like come together using their DIY know-how and other locals (i.e. Battletapes) to produce an album, I personally like to get behind it. Past enjoying the music myself, I think they're a band of high enough quality with good enough songs that they deserve exposure whenever they have the time to make a product. You'll notice our coverage of them is significantly higher whenever they release an album. We don't write about every single show they play.

And before I'm accused of being nepotistic, I don't know the dudes very well. I've met them each a time or two, but I cover them because I like their music and want people (not just musicians and folks who go to shows every night) to check them out. Though our blog has a built-in audience, we do try to reach out to randos and Google-searchers as well.
