Two good local podcasts worth checking out.

First up, the We Own This Town "Best of 2008" mix. A good selection of indie pop-centric local cuts here, including picks by new WOTT crew members Joe Baine Colvert--whose Lake Fever update should really be called "The Colvert Report"--and former Scene contributor Andrew Smithson. From Hotpipes' "Born in a Bomb" to Kindercastle's "Postmaster General," they cram 15 capris-wearing, National Talk Like a Pirate Day talkin', strangely victorious songs into their 50 minutes, including thee feel-good song of summer '08. (Hint: the title rhymes with "shoe in the crack fight.") Check it.

Secondly, WPLN recently did a series of stories (perhaps a little early on a Monday morning for rockers 'n' rollers) called "Music City Remixed: Transition in an Industry Town." It's now up as a complete 30-minute podcast, which makes a much more enjoyable listen, for me, than the cliffhanger format.

I wasn't particularly taken with the first installment, but I was hopeful, and as a whole, the piece touches on a variety of hot topics: the inevitability of downsizing--both operations and expectations; new kinds of music businesses outside the label mold; how to make money off music when everyone thinks music should be free. Sure, everyone and their haircut scout is trying to figure this stuff out, and it remains to be seen what's going to float and what's going to fail. But this is the Nashville angle, and you get to hear from Jason Moon Wilkins of Next Big Nashville, singer/Elle Macho-cist Butterfly Boucher and NoiseTrade empresario Derek Webb, to name but a few, in the process. Check it.
