The Commie Went Down to Georgia: Charlie Daniels Fears Socialism

From his home in Mt. Juliet, country music's very own Santa Claus recently waxed political on our economic crisis. Daniels expressed concern on his ever-thought-provoking blog Soap Box that the economic bailout plan could lead to more pork-barrel wool-pulling, and worse:

This is a huge federal power grab, a giant step toward socialism. A socialism that will come on so subtly and in the guise of noble sounding benevolent public programs that America will one day wake up and wonder how we got into this mess.

Paranoid much, C.D.? What exactly is the mess we'll find ourselves in? A 1984-esque dystopia with free healthcare? Regardless, Daniels clearly has some legitimate concerns. Besides, according to the article Sullivan shared with us, "country singers tend to be populists more than anything."

Populist, elitist or otherwise, you can view the debate amongst friends—Futureman and How I Became the Bomb to name a few—at Mercy Lounge tonight. OK, OK...so it might be slightly partisan. Flyer after the jump.

whoa whoa. hey buddy. if you doubt CD's patriotism, you just go down and grab yourself a copy of his single "This Flag Ain't No Rag", available (probably exclusively) at the Charlie Daniel's Museum on 2nd Ave.
(and i only know this because my Dad bought it).

His opinions are normally laughable, but in this case he is right and his concern is apt and justified. We should all be "paranoid" about nationalized investment firms whose CEOs are advising the White House and both presidential candidates.

This sh!t is serious regardless of who points out that fact.

Agree with Kevin.

I love it when burrito makes friends. On a personal note, in this specific instance I think Charlie very much speaks the truth. We're all entitled to a bit of hyperbole, however.

It is definitely frightening when the same government that has mismanaged a war is now in line to mismanage your mortgage.

Steve said:

At least it won't be the same government much longer.

Gee whiz, D Patrick, I didn't know that the Democrats favor state control over the means of production, at least not any more than the Republicans do.

Or do you equate "higher taxes on the rich" with "socialism," in which case you're an idiot who doesn't know what "socialism" means?

Do you also, by the way, think that Social Security and Medicare are socialism? Would we have been better off if FDR had died in 1933?

I love it when lying rightwing scumbags pretend to be reasonable human beings. It works until they, like, actually have something to say.

DRILL BABY DRILL! Now go threaten some blacks, gays, women who want a right to abortion, and the MSM.

charlie daniels used to be cool. he was a huge supporter of jimmy carter. then he made a ton of dough. speaks volumes about his character.

You need to get drilled... said:

Because someone disagrees with the bailout they are a "rightwing scumbag"? Your an idiot left wing reactionary sheep just as bad as all the idiot right wing reactionary sheep you hear on talk radio everyday. There's a difference between a fiscal conservative and a social conservative comrade.

DG - don't forget about all the people (paralyzed, blind, etc) who could be benefiting from stem cell research.

get drilled - using the wrong "your" makes You look like an idiot. it should be "you're an idiot..."

i'm not taking sides here, really. i'm just saying...

The bailout was bullshit. The market would have reset itself automatically. Yes there would have been more foreclosures, but those people couldn't afford to own homes in the first place, and now the predatory lenders who set up the crazy 'products' are getting paid by the taxpayers, Joesixpack who couldn't afford that fancy house in teh first place is getting paid by the taxpayers, and the people who were smart enough NOT to get into this mess are the ones footing the bill.

Karma's a bitch unless you throw enough money at it. Now we'll just go through this all over again in a few years. Thanks for nothing.

One more thing: A good friend of mine worked for Countrywide for years. We used to have lunch together. I remember quite clearly a day 2 years ago when he looked at me and said: "I can't believe we're doing this. I mean, we are SCREWING people and they don't even know it. One day the shit is gonna hit the fan." He eventually got out of the mortgage industry and is doing fine in a more stable line of work. But his comment stuck with me. I know my buddy was just following orders, but SOMEONE high enough up KNEW what they were doing. And THOSE are the assholes who will continue to live affluently while my renting ass bails them out.

Fuck that. Let the economy fail. Nobody's going to die, we're just going to have to learn not to be such extravagent assholes. I'm looking at you Williamson County.

Yes. They are socialist by definition. And the answer to the 2nd question: probably.

The problem is that the Williamson County peeps never really suffer. Its Joe Taxpayer in Nashville, Smyrna, MtJ or HVegas that gets screwed over.

ps. America. FUCK YAH!

That's Joe Sixpack to you.

Kevin you should stop listening to Rush Limbaugh and start thinking for yourself.

Kevin, if FDR had died in 1933 there wouldn't be a country here right now.

DG said:

One can only hope that when Kevin has to go to the unemployment office, they make him enter on his knees, then punch him in the ear. But in all likelihood he's some sort of student Republican with no context for what happens in the real world.

There are plenty of trailer homes in Williamson County, too. And it will be the same government for much longer. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
