Courting the CMT Vote
This article in the Toronto Star examines the increasingly rocky relationship between the country music community and the Republican Party. But, as unexpected an Obama endorsement from Toby Keith might be, for every one of those you get a "Raisin' McCain," or, perhaps even worse, one of these. While Tennessee might firmly be in the GOP column, I would wager that I see many more Obama stickers on cars and signs in yards across the state than McCain ones. So maybe a lot of Tennesseans are voting for a candidate they aren't all that crazy about. Coincidentally, country music sales slipped by 30 percent last year.
What does all this mean? Well, nothing. I'm just excited to see an honest-to-goodness media frenzy tonight.

Outside of Davidson and Shelby? You've gotta be kidding me.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 09:29:23 AMAgreed with Burrito. Davidson and Shelby may be blue but they're swimming in a sea of red.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 10:44:11 AMThe Toronto Star manages to conflate the country music community with Nashville as a whole. Music City U.S.A. is largely Democratic territory. On questions of presidential politics this is clear. Even as the rest of the state went Republican, Gore won Davidson County in 2000 and Kerry won Davidson County in 2004. As things get rocky between the country music stars and the GOP, country music stars fall closer in line with politics outside of Music Row. I hope the media flooding into town today gives a more accurate representation of Nashville's political leanings than the Toronto Star did.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 10:45:33 AMWell said. Another example of Nashville struggling to shake off most of the red(neck) stereotypes perceived by most folks outside of TN, but still hang on to the few of them that keep tourists dropping their cash on Broadway every night. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I love the dichotemy that is Nashville, TN. I think it's great. I think if the city ever fell one way or the other off of the fence it straddles, it would lose some of its charm.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 10:55:52 AMI don't know how to research this... it would require a lot of number crunching and digging up voter registration numbers, but I've heard that if at least 50% of the registered democrats in the Memphis and Nashville actually vote (assuming they vote for Obama), it won't matter how the rural areas vote.

Dude, Thomas Jefferson just rolled over in his grave.
(sorry if this is a repeat. the original never showed...so far. if the creamers would be so kind as to delete the least idiotic of my repeats, i'd be obliged.)
Posted 10/07/2008 at 12:54:28 PMburrito, My parents live in rural Tennessee (Macon County). No, there aren't really any Obama supporters out there, but I've never noticed many McCain signs either
Posted 10/07/2008 at 01:11:39 PMi don't know if that's necessarily a factor of enthusiasm (or lack thereof) for their candidate, but rather the lack of an army of students and volunteers passing out stickers and signs which are easier to recruit in urban areas or college towns.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 01:36:39 PMWell I have to confess, my song " High Maintenance Woman " was written about Sarah Palin.

The same area was covered with Bush/Cheney signs in 2000 and 2004. But you're right, the signs probably didn't come from students.
Posted 10/07/2008 at 02:20:16 PMeast murfreesboro is largely obama leaning, outside of that though...
Posted 10/07/2008 at 03:30:39 PMGoddamn, Toby, our song "I Wanna Sex You Up" was ALSO written about Sarah Palin!
And we're from Oklahoma, just like you!
