YELLOWVEST.jpg

Word on the street is that a cadre of yellow vest-clad people has been going around tearing down show flyers from poles around Music Row and other parts of Nashville. Anyone with information on this incredibly lame activity is asked to come forward immediately.

Well, yes, it is lame, and not very nice.

But I would love to hear an argument for the effectiveness of fliers in a non-pedestrian-oriented city like Nashville. I totally understand fliers at places like record stores or music venues, but I have always been a bit baffled by the practice of stapling 150 fliers to telephone poles. Do people really feel that this works?

Also, speaking of lame...if you are going to hang your fliers on telephone poles, for goodness sake, take them down when your show has passed.

People in yellow vests? Sounds like metro employees to me. And they're not lame, they're doing their jobs. What's lame is seeing the same jamband flier on every single pole in Hillsboro. And no, they never take them down afterwords and many times the number of fliers you see is inversely proportional to how good the act is...

Probably people who have taken it upon themselves to "clean up" the poles, but don't bother to read the dates before tearing them down. I'm all for tearing down old posters and pulling out the staples... but I emphasize the word "old."

That, or censorship junkies?

i don't think fliers are really super effective for getting people to that particular show, but they're ok for kind of getting your name or band's name or whatever in people's heads so they've heard of you and might check you out another time. and it's just bad karma to tear down one or cover one that hasn't passed yet. or maybe it's bad karma to litter in the first plays. is there a god? how big is the universe?

Flyers aren't necessarily going to make or break attendance, but they're part of pop music culture, and it doesn't seem to me like such a bad thing that they're hanging up. I don't want to live in the suburbs and see nothing but billboards and signs for lost cats.

There's a difference between a few well placed fliers and plastering all of west end for some lame laptop show at beer sellar!

what's the difference? i mean, i get what the difference is, but aside from some flawed concept of "tastefulness," what is the difference?

For that matter, are lost cat signs all that effective? I hope so, because they make me really sad.

the song on 91 right now is horrible said:

i witnessed this up on music row.
it looked like a bunch of high school kids and their teacher. I figured it was either an environmental club, or detention.

The old guy from the cooking supply store on hillsboro also periodically walks up and down the street tearing them down.

don't quote me, but i'm fairly certain it is illegal to post flyers. i know it is in my hometown. I've always wondered about the "companies" that provide Guerrilla ad campaigns.

i also remember it being a big issue in murfreesboro awhile back.

and flyers do work, sometimes. it's not a science.

I think.... said:

Flyer's are different for every band. Some bands audiences are used to seeing flyer's up for said band's shows and therefore it is important to be consistent. In other cases a band may spread the word entirely by the internet or word of mouth and not need to waste the $ or time on hanging them. I know for me its just one more way that i may find out about a show that otherwise might pass me by because i didn't read the paper or it didn't get listed or i didn't go to the band's website or whatever the case may be. As for the legality of hanging flyer's i believe it IS illegal here in town but is rarely enforced. I've hung them for years and have never had a problem. Also, i think creative flyer's with a message or purpose for exposure more than just promoting shows is a much more interesting use for flyering.
