Zine It All Before: NashvilleZine Hated Us Way Before You Did
People are always gettin' their haterade on toward the Scene, but years ago we had to go somewhere else on the web to find out about it. Now with the addition of Nashville Cream two years ago, we've really taken the heat off the paper and aimed it directly at the blog. "You're welcome."
All the recent bitching about our lack of metal coverage (or surplus of DND coverage) reminds me of back when NashvilleZine, the local music site I've long admired and imitated, used to bitch about how the paper never covered local music, period. It wasn't totally off base, it's just that the stuff being covered was more along the lines of AC singer-songwriter fare.
But even the Zine kinda cheered when we first reviewed the Pink Spiders, because the band's photo appeared as a little banner on the bottom of the cover that week. (In the post above, it makes it seem like they were on the whole cover, but they weren't.) It was a step in the right direction, along the path to making local music a regular part of the paper whenever possible (which we've never veered from). Same thing happened when Be Your Own Pet were on the cover that same year, although this time the band actually was the whole cover photo. (Even if they weren't an actual cover story, but a feature.)
Anyway, that was back in 2004, and it was truly a new day then. But this is not a post to say, "Things could be worse, you little snots," although that's very much true. It's really a post to point out that one minute you can be the lame uncle at a family reunion trying to be cool, and the next minute you're blowing Pitchfork every week. Damned if you do...
Anyway, thanks to one of the coolest fucking things on the web, you can type in an old web address and find a handful of pages collected over the years for most now-defunct sites. So I'd like to give you all the chance to go back and read old pages of the Zine. You'll notice many of the commenters are still around, and that all the posts are anonymous. How'd you guys like it if we did that? Then you'd never know who to hate.

you still don't cover any form of electronica.
Posted 08/15/2008 at 12:46:42 PMi've posted a bit about electronica in the past, but it's been awhile. I also used to write several critic's picks a month about electronic-oriented events, but i've been too lazy to write picks these days.
but yeah. i know that still isn't exactly "electronica coverage" but i disagree that the Scene doesn't cover ANY form of electronica. Jensen Sportag, Makeup and Vanity Set, Justin Kase, Oliver Dodd, Mashville, and others have been in print and on this blog quite a bit.
and maybe that's just our "hipster" electro, but this isn't much of an electronica town. maybe i'm not as in the loop as i think, but there's really only a handful of stuff worth covering.
Posted 08/15/2008 at 01:31:43 PMThanks for the memories, Nashvillezine. I do miss Todd A.
Posted 08/15/2008 at 01:53:00 PMThems were the days. Missing of Todd A seconded!
Posted 08/15/2008 at 02:54:54 PMCasio..thanks for at least being honest.
You'd be surprised at how much electronica is in Nashville. We've got quite a handful of artists here that are signed to some of the most successful dance music labels in the world. Terry Grant, Real Time Hand Motion, Sanchez and The Shockers, Joey Modus etc etc etc..There have been people pushing the sound here in Nashville for years before the “hipster electro” scene took off. You can thank Justin Kase for that. His CTRL + ALT + DISCO night started what’s now a pretty healthy scene. I was a part of the night with Justin and Oliver for quite some time until we moved in a different direction.
Tonight we have Terry Grant a successful Nashvillian with releases on Bedrock, System and other independent dance labels at Ombi Bar. I don’t mean to promote the night on your blog, we’re only attempting to spread the sound to people that may not know where to look. We hope to see you out sometime..

Posted 08/15/2008 at 03:29:11 PMwhy has the term "Nashvillain" not yet replaced "Nashvillian"? It's only one letter change, and sounds way more bad ass.
Posted 08/15/2008 at 05:42:20 PMIf the writers of this blog/the Scene can't take critisisms maybe they should think about doing something else.
Doesn't it make you wonder that if so many people think your coverage of things in biased why you wouldn't try to address the problems people continue to bring up...instead of making excuses and being so narrow minded..you would think they would try to use feedback in a positive way and not act like babies about it?That is normally what open forums like this are used for...?
Posted 08/15/2008 at 07:39:42 PMnope.
Posted 08/16/2008 at 02:06:01 PMAaron,
Been trying to do that for years! Apparently it's not as catchy as ATLien for some reason. Psh! Young Buck could easily turn it into "something" if he tried. C'mon rap/hip hop scene...you can do it!
Pete K., I'd like to learn more about the local electronic scene nights! When? And still at Ombi?
Cheers,
