It's funny that you mention that, malina, I'm actually holding auditions for my indie-rock super group The TigerBearWolfRock ExplosionExpierience SuperQuintet Plus One.

I know they expanded it this year to regional acts and acts that have roots/strong ties to Nashville. Cake Bake Betty's probably more tied to Nashville than a few of the other acts playing, even.

I'll second that motion. Shoot The Mountain might be the best new band in town in a long long while.

Jimmy the Lung. (He did a documentary on Ken Berryhill this year that made the Nashville Film Festival. It was good, especially in comparison to the other shameless music doc's out there.) Jimmy also has a sitcom in the works for Music City Arts. And he is a musician, too. Bring on Jimmy the Lung.

The Magic Wands performance will be a showcase, FYI.

BP, The Selmanaires were originally slotted to play our showcase, but had a scheduling conflict come up a few weeks ago.

And I'm a big fan of both Mean Tambos and STM. They'd both get my vote, that is assuming that Stories That Live were not in contention. Which it looks like we aren't.

Goodmoring Powerheart melted my face at The Basement last Friday! Not to mention the fact that their lead guitarist is totally dreamy!!

Goodmorning Powerheart has influenced me more than any other band in the world. And that's including The Hung Jury featuring William Hung!

Shoot The Mountain! Their live show is one the best in Nashville. Also, Mean Tambourines should definitely be playing NBN. Somebody needs to make this happen and while you are out doing that, you should pick up some Chinese food for me.

Bewilderbeast, we (Ocelots) only got on the list because of our petition. It wasn't 600 signatures or anything, but we got people to write really big.

Would have liked to see The Loft or Gabe Dixon Band. 2 very good bands that were omitted.

checked out 'the armed forces,' as well as 'the pink spiders, and 'american bang' on the internet. yeah, i know they're not playing at NBN, but they are bandied about quite a bit on this blog site. All these bands suffer from some serious post-M'boro Self/Spongebath records syndrome. Power pop with diminished chords thrown in for good measure. This sh*t makes me gag...we should vehemently boycott these 3 bands. and brandon jazz should just start doing opiaties instead of just dressing/quoiffing like he does. It might give his music that extra 'suck' that it's so obviously missing.

Shoot the Mountain is the only band requested on here to show a spark of something new and creative with such a basic rock band set up.

I caught them at the 5 Spot. I just stopped by for a sandwich and a beer and was lucky to walk in right when they started.

I know of at least 3 bands on that big list who never formally applied (i.e., "paid") to play.

A scam, I tell you. A scam.

What was the application fee, 20 bucks? Who cares! Most showcase festivals like this have an application fee, and most of them have bands who are selected without going through said application process. It's not like Jason and Ethan are sitting back lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills by putting this thing on. At best they'll be lucky to break even.

As someone from the outside, looking in on the selection process, I can say for a fact that the selection process was much more formal this year. For instance, there was a selection committee assembled of dozens of local music business players including local press, venue owners, venue bookers, artist management, promoters and so on. Some "big" names as well.

If your band isn't playing NBN it is b/c the committee didn't select you or b/c you failed to submit to play. Also, I know a few bands that are playing that didn't submit to play as well. They are all bands that played NBN in either 2006 or 2007 so I would assume that NBN already had their info on file. Also, I heard that 600ish bands submitted to play this year. That's remarkable. No wonder they needed a team to sort through all of that.

You, and everyone else are absolutely right. . . my band totally should have just paid the application fee. . .a combination of stupidity and laziness kept me from registering my band. . .but it would be cool if some of these 'votes' end up counting for something and we get to play. It wasn't something we ever whined about. . .but definitely realized after the deadline passed that we should have done it. If we get to play i'm sure it will be fun. . .if not it's our own fault. Thanks to everyone who left a comment for 'mean tambourines'. . . and everyone who posted honest criticism.

Mr. Truso, my criticism wasn't really pointed at you or your band, there just seems to be a lot of bitching about the lineup that seems to be unwarranted. It's just annoying that some people feel that not being invited to a music festival constitutes a capital crime.

This is a good opportunity for bands to promote the hell out of their showcases since they should know that there is tons of competition most nights. Venues recognize that and they all talk. If a band draws well at NBN, that's probably a good sign that they would do even better headlining their own show later on. Not to mention, there will probably be a large handful of A&R, management, press, in town that week for those of you that think that is a good thing. i was incredibly impressed with the turnout last year at NBN. I went to about 15 showcases and almost all of them were well attended, at least 5 were at capacity.
