Let's Change the Name to Nilbog Cream, 'cuz This Place Is Troll City

While it's not neccesarily about music, local or otherwise, I think everybody on here should check out the New York Times' great article about the Internet troll phenomenon. While I certainly won't ever win an award for interweb civility, there is something to be said for having the guts to insult somebody while making your identity known to the general public (or at least having a handle that's easy to Google). Hurling insults and starting trouble is fun, don't get me wrong, but the tone of the discussion around here has become inane. Seriously, did anybody even listen to a Battletapes production before you guys started mass producing the voodoo dolls? We know that you think we have shitty taste in music because we aren't your friend, don't have a graduate degree in guitar performance and wear pants that show off our sexy, sexy legs—but we want to change that.

Tell us who you think should replace Be Your Own Pet, How I Became the Bomb, Movement Nashville and Funky Good Time on our altar of adulation. And don't say "The Falls City Angels," 'cause that joke is fucking tired. Tell us who you really think warrants the boundless enthusiasm we lavish on every band with beards and vintage T-shirts.

Or just say mean things about people you've never met. Whatever floats your boat.

I think that The Turf would be completely deserving of such Creamtastic adoration.

First of all, I always throw a link on here, and I try not to insult anybody, and I'm not offended by your taste in music, and pretty much like the bands you listed. That being said, sometimes I think the more southern-tinged bands that put some butts in seats and are doing some good solid stuff don't get enough mention. Chris Janson, Branded Sons, and out of towners like Caddle and Blackberry Smoke...people like that...since you asked.

you and your redneck friends can go to southern rock hell, doyle.

I'd like to hear more about the jazz scene, and I'm not talking about Bosco's or F. Scotts. Tell me what people like Chris West, Greg Bryant, Jeff Coffin, and Roy Wooten are up to. There's some great enevelope-pushing going on and it doesn't involve jam bands.

Kidsmeal is good, and you give him props, but what about DJ Wick-it who just made another fine album, or the drumnbass kids (whose music I don't quite get but they're as passionate about it as you are about sloppy rock) or maybe remind me as to what Mindub and Chek are doing...

Having said this, I don't think things are as bad as they were a year ago. I used to think you didn't cover noise music enough but I've seen plenty of mention lately.

Just a quick FYI: The coverage in the paper tends to be a fair amount more broad than what gets covered here on Cream, so try to check that out before you bitch. The Critics' Picks section includes everything from metal to dance to touring indie acts to Billy Currington. Most of that is due to the fact that there are only a couple of us contributing to this fair blog, while the paper edition relies on an eclectic stable of freelancers.

I don't think anybody's bitchin' (yet), but I forgot to add that I absolutely hate Kirk Cameron and I've never met him. Since we're being so forthright today I'll admit to really dispising the guy.

HighonLife said:

i know it's a little off of the given topic, but it would be cool to see local rock label profiles. like Spat!, Black Label Empire, Theory 8, Fictitious. many people know the bands on their rosters, but not as many know about the labels.

Hackelope said:

Oh come on! Kirk Cameron is a pioneer of his time! I mean take a look at his groundbreaking work in "The Way of the Master." He is the grea-okay yeah I hate that guy too.

repost from the byop thread regarding trolls:

thanks for getting the short circuit reference, alternabattlegrunge. jackjack still hasn't offered an opinion about something he likes in nashville's music scene. i guess continuing this thread is pointless unless folks are gluttons for snarky comments. the one thing i would like to respond to of flapjack's digs at btapes is that it's rediculous to think every engineer is going to personally love every project they work on. people become friends through work and just generally hanging out and want to support each other more on those merits than what it would be like to be a 'fan' of something and have a totally different dynamic. i know and really like every member of byop even though their genre of music is not the kind of thing i personally dig these days (i seem to be mostly buying old country, soul, and lounge for the sake of this discussion). i saw byop at their first showcase out of nashville when the bassist was still 15 and had never even flown on an airplane before. they were in freaking high school. they were lucky/blessed to have a chance to get exposure out of nashville and they actually HUNG/HANG OUT in the nashville music scene unlike a lot of this city's exports. they actually had side projects, contributions and other interests besides their 'main gig'. a lot of 'trolls' on here really don't seem to care about the opinions they toss around but more so about enjoying being antagonistic for the entertainment of seeing who responds and how they do so. that's fine but if the thread goes this far, it's pretty lame to have not offered an opinion about something they feel positive about. i feel this reflects more poorly about a music scene than any band in any particular genre with any particular 'deal'. for the most part, i love nashville and i love how the scene has shaped up here over the years and i'm here to stay.

You guys keep covering what you're covering and we'll keep covering what we're covering. No sense in us all being the same. Plus, we get to continue to poke fun at each other that way.

Not so critical now that you're name is being associated with the criticism are you, Chris? I'm fine with people criticizing myself and my writing when it's not done in troll-like manner by some fat dude from La Vergne that doesn't know shit about music. Your stunt was full of juvenile hypocrisy, ethnocentricity and homophobia - and you wouldn't even put your name on it until I called you out. You want to act like you're some working class hero, sniping at all the yuppies and saving the day for righteous rock dudes all across town but you are wrong. You are a sad little man, with a microscopic world view and an inferiority complex.

You aren't funny and your writing isn't clever. In fact you make a point of abstaining from being clever - you aren't sacrastic or witty. You were just mean. If I wrote a blog post that said "Chris Czynszak is fat and runs a shitty website, his wife is ugly and his children are missing chromosones" and then went to your comment section and posted a link, wouldn't you take a little bit of offense? Oh, wait, you don't have comments on your post. My bad. I forgot that you sight likes to rock it 1998 style. ( Awesome graphics, by the way .)

Don't act like you are innocent - don't act like you had any other intention beyond annonymously sniping at people you don't know for having tastes that fall outside of your macho, racist ideology. That you want to take the high road now, after obviously being a total fucking troll, is bullshit.

You came onto this site and asked us to read your shitty little blurb, and now I am criticizing your criticism. That's fair game, right? Can you handle being in the spotlight now that it's shining on your poorly concieved bullshit? I don't think so, you back pedalling little twerp.

If you guys are gonna be such babies about people doing things anoymous on this blog force people to register before they can comment.
Are the aforementioned bands not just a flash in the pan? Don't be in a hurry to replace them though, it will happen over time. Some other cookie cutter crap will emerge.
Are people going to actually remember any of these bands in ten years? I can’t think of any active bands in Nashville that I have gone to see that are mind blowing. Maybe the bands in this town need to step up instead of the music writers.

Anonymous said:

Yeah,do that and see how entertaining this site would be you'd just have a bunch of scensters kissing everyone's asses afraid to say anything bad to each other! They way they define "trolls" on this site is anyone who doesn't have the same opinion or point of view that they do,what a fuckin joke!!

Bawston Sean said:

The hope is that maybe people could just take a little bit of resposiblity for their actions and identify themselves when they offer critiques. We put our names out there, so it would be nice if the people who don't agree with would also put their name out there. If, say, another local music publication wants to rip on our coverage they should have the cajones (and the brains) to name the author - because frankly they are pretending to be legit, and nothing proves legitimacy like troll-behavior. The problem with the "Enraged"s and "JackJack"s is not that they disagree with us, but that they do it in such a cowardly way. Just because the web is only 15 years old, doesn't mean we should all act like we're 15.

But I agree, the bands probably do need to step it up a bit...

surewood said:

I usually don't put my URL because I'm lazy like that.
Nashvillerock.net does serve a purpose. All the bands they support are not something I would ever expect to see discussed here.
Their website design does need some help. The fact that you can't leave comments is kind of pathetic.
So...NashvilleRock guys....make a better webpage so you can help to improve your "rock" scene. Please.
If only Gary would hurry up with fuckthenashvillescene.com, we would have places for everyone to discuss their favorite local music.

Call me an insane conspiracy theorist, but it seems that these so-called trolls only emerge when things become god-awful slow on this blog. I'm not saying anyone with a connection to the scene is posting that crap, but obviously you creamsters know exactly what sort of posts are going to generate the most negative activity on this blog...for instance anything with BYOP in the title always brings out the haters. Of course it doesn't help having windbags like battletapes taking the bait every single godamm time...god the dude's like charlie brown with the football. I'm not even going to mention sean's embarrassing flame...oh there I just did. Let it go, people. And maybe you should actually read that NYTimes article you posted - you might actually learn how to run this thing and control those pesky 'trolls'.

Jack said:

Enraged, I'm glad you've elevated the local media debate with this line from Nashvillerock.net:

"I mean, if you have to choose between the Nashville Scene and All the Rage, you have to go with the Scene for the pure fact that they don’t have a bleach-blonde, high and mighty, taste making bitch that is constantly spewing about all of the fabulous parties at which she stuffed her size 16 jeans through the door. I’m not naming names."

Well, thanks for the backhanded compliment, and I can forgive the grammar mistakes, but calling the writer in question a bitch and commenting on her size is just a tad sad and pathetic. I'm not a fan of her writing, but she hardly deserves that sort of weird misogynist rant.

JackJack said:

Cmon' Jack, he is really just saying what everyone wants to say. A little harsh yes but when you toss yourself in the public eye so much what is to be expected? What do bands/writers/recording engineers expect no critisim? I guess the do on the "Nashville Cream",wtf?

Enraged said:

For the folks that actually "get it" as more of a parody piece, thank you.

Sean, you just can't let this go can you? I'm more than willing to take the shit that you're flinging at me on this blog. I think it's funny. Yep, I'm overweight. Big deal. I don't recall making a comment about your appearance. Yep, I live in LaVergne. I don't recall making a comment about where you lived. The line about my wife being ugly and my children missing a chromosome was actually funny. And, yes, I would take offense to it as the stuff I wrote pertaining to you in Rage Against the Scene was about ONE item that you wrote. Nothing about you personally. That's okay, you have a thin skin.

After reading this blog for a long time, I knew you would throw a tantrum about it.
Yes, I put my name on the article when you called me out. How does that make me a coward? If I ignored it and left it anonymous, then you can call me a coward. There will be another entry next week and I'll include my name on that one as well just so you don't get your panties in a twist.

I'm racist? Homophobic? Really? I'd like to know what parts of my article gave you that impression.

As for me not knowing shit about music and not being funny, I guess I'll tell the many people that have responded to the article saying that they loved it and laughed their asses off, that since the GOD of all Nashville media Sean Maloney thinks it sucks and thinks it's not funny, that they are wrong and shouldn't have laughed.
As I said, there will be another entry next week and I know you can't wait to read it.

Wtf? Is the battletapes clique the mafia now? They don't seem that cool or tough. They seem like a bunch of 30 year olds that got their lunch money taken and heads slammed against the lockers too much in Jr. Highschool.

haha! but i like trying to kick footballs and falling on my back...

but it is kinda true, i guess. not that i really give a shit, but, you know... plus, where would the fun be in trolls posting shit trying to get a rise out of people like me if we just completely ignored them? there's no fun in that game and my worry that someone think me "lame" for anything i say just doesn't even really enter my mind.

maybe we should start a supplemental section to the cream called "extreme officing(!)" so we can like dis on all those fucked up reports you gave your bosses or that time you accidentally shit yourself in the conference room trying to slip out a fart and blame it on the dude from payroll or whatever it is that 'normal' folk do. or, you know, "hey fatass, clean the cheerio's and cum off your shirt before you go to jenna's toybox today, for god's sake."

Hey guys,

I'm with Doyle and Burrito on this. Coverage on this blog, though really good for things that skew indie pop etc, does seem to leave out things going on in other worlds. But I ain't bitchin' or anything. Still a good read.

That said, as I open today's issue of the Nashville Scene, I do notice something peculiar: Love/Hate Mail by "Alex" and "Jane Doe" (but also a Ron Jarrell) via NashvilleScene.com.

jeremy said:

one band i think deserves some attention, or who i enjoyed last week, was shoot the mountain. maybe they've already been covered some? either way, those kids were really fun and sounded great!

cody said:

shoot the mountain (formerly the jigsaw mountain boys) are indeed awesome, and they were given a pretty enthusiastic notice in last week's spin. the show was the first time i'd seen their entire set, and they've definitely made the transition from solid cowpunk to something much more expansive and exciting. spin said they were "the best-kept secret in Nashville," and i'd have to agree.

Darrin said:

"Is it okay if we point out to Heather Byrd that Harry Carey died in 1998 so she couldn't possibly have met him at Lollapalooza this year?

I'm assuming she was talking about the statue of him outside of Wrigley. Surely she's not that clueless.

Mark P. said:

Read it here for yourself, Darrin:

http://byrdie.tumblr.com/post/44720480/the-lollapalooza-recap-complete-with-band-celeb

She really IS that clueless and the 'Four Pigs' mention was in one of her Rage articles a couple of years ago. I was offended enough at her ignorance that I couldn't forget it! She has the same problem that a lot of the writers who grew up in Nashville have: they can't let go of their high school days.
