Best news ever, I hated this stupid no talent band!!Awesome!!!!!!!
Posted 08/01/2008 at 01:16:38 PMtight, high waisted pants everywhere are very sad
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:06:56 PMI wonder if Jemina and Brynne are going to become five dollar crackwhores working Dickerson Pike since they're unemployed now? Jemina, I might would pay five bucks to hit that, maybe just two bucks for Brynne though?
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:15:33 PMfuckin terrible band, won't be missed.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:18:35 PMwow b.y.o.j. -- did you think of that on your own?
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:30:35 PMWhy is it "Awesome!!!!!!!"?
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:35:20 PMi guess it was all the cocaine and jet planes that finally got 'em, eh? or maybe it was that they couldn't agree whether they should kill puppies or kittens or something. what a bunch of assholes!!
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:44:39 PMgood band, bad news.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 02:46:58 PMJesus.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 03:04:42 PMI didn't like them that much either, but is there a need to be a 13 year old about this??? BYOJ, I think I speak for most when I say that you are just a little boy with his finger in his nose and his thumb up his ass.
i never got to see them live. i'm so mad at myself.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 03:20:47 PMBest news for Nashville in a while! This band really made the music scene here look fucking ridiculous. Now If battletapes would just follow the lead and call it quits too there would be no more polluting Nashville with icky-pop bullshit.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 03:26:05 PMThe first record fuckin' ripped. Sorry to see them go.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 03:43:33 PMi would like to take this opportunity to also announce that i'm breaking up with my studio/house so jackjack can have more best news. i sure do hate all that sugary pop music i make myself record, it's a real drag not producing (insert jackjack favorite musical style here) records like i always hoped i would.
what a load off!
Posted 08/01/2008 at 03:56:40 PMI saw them play a couple of live shows that smoked pretty much everything else in town for pure unbridled energy. Can't wait to see what they do next.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 04:00:55 PMnot to toot my own horn... but i reported this like a month ago...
take that stereogum.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 04:23:51 PM*toot* *toot*
Posted 08/01/2008 at 04:35:30 PMYeah Jeremy, go buy a Macbook, woops, that would make your studio pretty obsolete. Just because you dress up like Steve Albini for halloween doesn't mean that your really him dude.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 04:47:24 PMyeah a ton of people knew this a month ago. some of us just don't get off on being the first person to "report it". but you are still cool. no, really.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:10:40 PMwow. just... wow.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:13:42 PMeh? albini wears stupid hats and those one-piece work suit things... and i didn't even dress up for halloween. and i sure would love a macbook, even if it would make my studio "pretty obsolete"! (??)
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:18:12 PManyway, jackjack, it's been a pleasure reading your observations. if you ever decide to leave your computer screen and would like to discuss music in a situation where you didn't have to hide behind a "handle", please feel free to approach me to do so. unlike most of the people here, i would be happy to have a face-to-face about my opinions and views concerning this scene and/or shoot the shit...
I heard it was the blow.
"Pure unbridled energy" doesn't do much for me by itself, but they always seemed like nice kids. Probably lucky to have taken the ride, and maybe they're getting off before it really fucks 'em up. Besides, now we get to look forward to even more over-hyped side projects.
I've got a macbook and all that, but I'm on an ADAT kick right now. Tape saturation! Obsolesence (sp?) is cool sometimes.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:24:13 PMEverybody knows that JackJack makes the best records AND makes the Nashville music scene look great. Let's do what JackJack says.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:27:02 PMyou should try getting off on more things, then. there's a lot more getting off involved.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:27:58 PMholy shit.
after not coming to this site for weeks, i am now reminded why i stopped. give some anonymous posting capability it's like a festival for dumbasses.
it's sad. like that bullshit with all the postings about shane. that had nothing to do with ANYTHING. i mean, do you people even know who or what you're commenting on or is this just where you go on breaks from world of warcraft to spit out one-liners? (sorry, jay)
as for be your own pet. . .i'm sure not one of them cares what's being said here. they're on to new things.
and jeremy, don't they know your house is like mac heaven?!? so futuristic!! everything all stainless steel and with the ability to levitate!! obviously they don't know you either.
jesus.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:36:16 PMFuck this, I'm going to listen to Danger Bear.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:37:27 PMme too! fyi you heard it hear first. danger bear is going to break up next month
Posted 08/01/2008 at 05:54:00 PMBrynne is hot. I'd tap that.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 06:17:14 PMwtf? i have impersonators now?
Posted 08/01/2008 at 06:58:32 PMSeth, I think it should be some sort of "rite of passage" to be impersonated on the Cream.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 07:17:45 PM"Fuck this, I'm going to listen to Danger Bear."
YAY!
Posted 08/01/2008 at 07:38:53 PMI'm hungry.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 07:57:30 PMI'm sorry Jeremy, it must've been Jack Endino then. I really just read these for fun most of the time. I don't have a lot of time to discuss music with people that think "Be Your Own Pet" is an innovative band like you do. I'm just happy that this band broke up, they've gotten so much attention and taken some much of attention away from deserving bands in Nashville. I mean a song about a "food fight", didn't know people existed that were that lame. Peace be with you and your hipster buddies, may you find all the female jeans and white belts with spikes that your heart desires.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 08:48:50 PMPretty fitting description of Jeremy i think...
How does a band becoming internationally famous draw attention AWAY from a music scene?
Posted 08/01/2008 at 09:15:10 PM"they've gotten so much attention and taken some much of attention away from deserving bands in Nashville."
I know. I blame BYOP for the hogging all the attention from, um, Paramore and Autovaughn. Some, some much attention. Also, I blame Jeremy for taking our jars of pennies from local bands to help them make records sound better than they could on their own. Fuck that dude.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 10:02:15 PM"How does a band becoming internationally famous draw attention AWAY from a music scene?"
Posted 08/01/2008 at 10:10:28 PMYeah, like what I said was--
"they've gotten so much attention and taken so much of attention away from deserving bands in Nashville."(there was a typo in the earlier statement,it should've said "so" instead of "some"). If you've read the Nashville Scene in the past couple of years I think you would totally agree with that statement. If you're talking about the "band becoming internationally famous", which is addressing a completely different idea, I and many others think that they make Nashville's music scene look silly as I stated earlier. On a lighter note, it's Friday night and time for a "FOOD FIGHT", are you people serious?
Remember when the Ramones sang about a rock 'n' roll high school? What stupid lyrics. Fuck those dead guys.
Posted 08/01/2008 at 11:05:08 PMYou people are fucking crazy!I love how bands form alliances on this site,it's better than fucking "Big Brother" with a hint of 90210 in it's prime! You kids are so afraid to be realistic with each other it's ridiculous. All these band guys are buddies and god forbid someone say something negative about someone in the circle. Its free fucking reign to talk shit about bands outside of their circle though.I mean you gots to know better than to say anything about the battle tapes compound. Now you got Mike coming after you,you better watch out it'll be Joel Dahl after you next!Your gonna talk shit about Autovaughn cause they aren't in your clique and not mention De Novo Dahl because they're your buddies?Wtf?
Posted 08/01/2008 at 11:43:18 PMi wanna know what jackjack's last name is?!
Posted 08/02/2008 at 01:11:57 AMat this point, his last name well as be "fucking clueless". i love the byop kids and i think their music is a lot of fun. i'm 30 and it's not what i listen to in my spare time but if i was 17, theyd definitely be a fave. as for them being innovative, i know they took their music seriously but they'd never say they were innovating anything.
and if you think i wear skin tight jeans or white belts or spiky stuff, i guess you've probably never seen me out cos i definitely don't dress 'hip' unless tshirts and jeans are hip.
and jack endino? what the fuck? i'm more into producers than engineers, anyhow... bob johnston, geoff emmerick (yeah, he was pretty much a producer the way he engineered sounds), fucking JON BRION. people like that. but you seem to be getting your engineer/producer ideas from the grunge handbook so i guess i'll just let you figure that shit out on your own.
and of course you don't want to talk about music face to face, it would mean getting off your ass and making an effort at something rather than bitching about shit you apparently have no clue about.
and, with that, i will say "fuck off" and "i've wasted enough time even 'discussing' anything with you." hope you can find a clue out there somewhere, though i don't hold out much hope for you.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 02:15:39 AMEveryone, JackJackyJackinJackJACKYL is right. Because of his insightful comments, I've decided to give up this charade of making "music" and move to Afghanistan, where there are no food fights, because there is no food. Well done, sir!
Posted 08/02/2008 at 03:50:08 AMin all seriousness... please explain to me, if BYOP was really a good band, why their local draw never did anything. i saw 2 "hometown" shows and they were grossly under attended. in one case, the room was nearly empty. i was under the impression that bands that don't suck usually see an increase in fans/draw at shows, at least at first.
i don't really see how it hurt our music scene b/c it did add some diversity, but it definitely didn't build the credibility of our scene. as for paramore and autovaughn, what was the point there? we should hate them b/c they are commercially successful or b/c their music sucks or both? i'm so confused. don't you need some sort of success-story to generate interest for a music scene?
Posted 08/02/2008 at 07:36:47 AMMan, remember when rock and roll was fun? Thank god THAT'S all over.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 08:16:20 AMPE, yeah, that was my point, that the only bands that BYOP were taking attention away from were bands that were getting plenty of attention elsewhere. That bands, sadly, don't get press for quietly making interesting, exciting, challenging music. In a town where they hand you a guitar at the city limits, that's not newsworthy. Bands that do big things get press.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 08:28:02 AMHOLY SHIT CODY, START WRITING ANOTHER COVER STORY! HERE YA GO!!
Posted 08/02/2008 at 08:40:54 AM1. Fact: Jeremy does good work.
2. Fact: BYOP album #2 is total #2. And everyone knows you have to go #1 to get to #2.
It's toilet law, and it's probably lyric in an unwritten Rush song.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 09:35:05 AMI know the heat of the moment has passed, but I just want to take the stance that all of the people on here are responding to you, JackJack,
with differing opinions not because we're best friends with BYOP, but because you're an idiot.
Jumping up and down on a band's grave and ANONYMOUSLY pointing your finger at people who do actually contribute to the local music scene (with or without your approval) sort of brings that out in people. And being pissy with the Nashville indie scene because of fashion elitism is misplaced anger. Make it because if we knew who you were, we would probably all agree: you have nothing positive to contribute, you have nothing interesting to say (yet still talk all the fucking time) AND you tuck your shirts into your underwear and pleated khakis with a nice, sensible belt and look like a bitch.
bitch.
"it's ridiculous. All these band guys are buddies"!!!!
you fucking idiot.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 10:25:08 AMgoooooooo TEAM!!!!
Posted 08/02/2008 at 01:16:24 PMYou want to call people idiots? You should read your own posts Malina? Can you not see that there are a bunch of people on here that are scared to step on each other's toes? I'm sorry that people have different opinions about things and you show your maturity level by calling people names. Jeremy I thought you were the one reading the grudge handbook, if you haven't you should because your primitive work seems to be ripping it off? Damn Jeremy, you guys are acting like babies, I'm sorry I said something bad about your buddies golly gee, "fuck off", thats a little harsh man. I wish you luck in reliving your 17 year old glory days through kiddy music, that is seriously the funniest explanation of someone enjoying a band that I have ever heard. You guys take this shit a little too seriously.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 01:28:02 PMGRUNGE, not gruDge, you fucking moron.
also, my teen years were by no means "glory days". as far as enjoying life, now is a my favorite time... lots of great bands around looking to make awesome records (you know "primitive" ones where we track to wax cylinder and shit and no overdubs! god strike me down if you find a single mellotron or anything psychedelic on any of my records... oops.)
Posted 08/02/2008 at 01:46:12 PMso, jackjack...what Nashville bands do you think deserve recognition? I would really like to know.
Posted 08/02/2008 at 03:41:05 PMJeepers Creepers Jeremy, sorry I spelled the Mtv catch word "grunge" wrong.Does that constitute you calling me a "fucking moron".The fact that you even use that word dude, well that speaks for itself.Putting Albini in that category because he recorded a Nirvana record, well that is down right fucking stupid.Wait a minute,I bet your one of those guys that uses "Indie Rock" or "Alternative"as genre catch phrases. How redneck is it to start cursing people out that don't agree with you? That example isn't a way to recruit new members to the battle tapes team.Surewood,I suppose all the nashville bands that deserve recognition are the battle tapes bands since anyone who says anything critical about that clique is a "fucking moron".
Posted 08/02/2008 at 10:02:02 PM51 comments--i think i wasted my time reading 49 of them
Posted 08/03/2008 at 01:37:28 AMThere's a "battle tapes bands" clique?! Shit! Jer, when do we get our satin jackets? Also, are we allowed to date outside the clique? Does the fact that I played on a record you didn't record mean I'm out of the clique? HOW DOES BOBBY BARE, JR FIT INTO ALL THIS?!
Fucking moron. Fucking. Moron. Fucking moron, fucking moron, fucking moron.
Posted 08/03/2008 at 04:40:25 AMHa Ha.Jay, you and Jeremy can start talking bad about my mother too if you want to. Your not going to hurt my feelings. If that is such an absurd idea why are you two getting so mad about it?Ha Ha.
Posted 08/03/2008 at 11:43:42 AMhey flapjack! yo' mama was a snowblowuh!
Posted 08/03/2008 at 12:16:24 PMOh come on jackjack. Can you name your top 3 favorites. You seem to be pretty passionate about the local band subject. It would really help us all know where you're coming from.
Posted 08/03/2008 at 12:49:54 PM"hey flapjack! yo' mama was a snowblowuh!" Best burn ever!
Posted 08/03/2008 at 01:11:21 PMSeriously surewood it was BYOP.Best daughter of studio execs band ever uh I mean best Nashville band ever.I'm so dissapointed they broke up,maybe Jeremy and Jay can start a kiddy band now to fill the void that you all have. They could do another "food fight" song, and record it on a Macbook uh I mean at battle tapes studio high tech levitating studio.Surewood and "familiar sideman" if your going to kiss ass you need to learn to kiss ass that counts.
Not to detract from this wonderful discussion but does anyone know if any of the rumors, fist fights amongst the band, are true?
Posted 08/03/2008 at 03:38:55 PMI don't like or care about BYOP. But "So?"- why does it matter. Either yes, they think they are ~rock stars~ and like to behave as such. Or no, they've just moved on (was BYOP supposed to exist forever?), since rumors are usually false anyway.
I'm guessing Jackjack(etc) probably has a recording studio and he is jealous Battletapes is better and more popular.
Posted 08/03/2008 at 04:30:23 PM1. i think the line was actually "hey laser lips, your mama was a snowblower".
2. name one record albini did that wasn't a grunge record. now name one grunge record i did. i win!
2b. wait, didn't you lump me in with shit cos i engineer the byop records? ooooh...
3. who really cares about steve albini anyway? i think he's a great engineer but records aren't about who is engineering or producing them really... hopefully, in the end, it's about the band and the songs.
4. drummachine... exactly, they were a band who formed when they were like 15 or 16... it's pretty amazing they lasted as long as they did...
5. jemina's folks aren't music exec's... her dad is a photographer and her mom works in a fabric store. they are by no means rich. maybe jonas' dad used his ronnie millsap client connection to make them famous? or, at best, his vince neil connection to get them on all the ozzfest tours and mtv reality shows... ?
6. alternative grunge indie electronic fucking shithead mama.
7. coooock. (indie alt nu-metal)
8. anyone kissing my ass would be wasting their time. i'm fairly poor and i have no real "pull" with a single label.
9. albini!
10. grungebiniternadie
Posted 08/03/2008 at 06:36:40 PMI am always amazed at how much shit is talked here by people about which bands suck and who gets more credit than they should; at the same time, you rarely see the people who level the harshest criticisms (which are often personal attacks) ever point out what they do like. They also generally do it anonymously.
Both things are such obvious cop-outs that are generally defended by saying, "Why do you take this so seriously?" which is a problematic defense in and of itself. After all, for it's NUMEROUS FLAWS, Cream is pretty much the only game in town for this sort of discussion.
So JJ et al, why don't you grow a sack and show that you're actually proud of you're opinions: Let us know who you are. Let us know what you think deserves respect in the local scene. Come out to a show.
It ought to work something like this:
I'm Drew, the bartender/manager/asst. to Bruton/etc. at Mercy. I never liked BYOP. It's just not my thing. I see why some people do, and I see why they did well. I think some stuff Jeremy does is great. Other stuff, I can take or leave. Off the top of my head, my favorite local bands right now are Jensen Sportag, KinderCastle, HIBTB, DND, The Clutters, EGold & The Tits. I generally feel that any band getting attention in other markets is positive for the music scene here. I'd like to see the aforementioned bands get more attention. (Obviously, some need it more than others.) I think that the attention that BYOP, the Spiders, American Bang & DND have gotten is good for the city and for bands here.
If you disagree, cool. There are good arguments against mine. Just don't be a pussy about it.
Because of my job, I get to meet most of the folks "in the scene" here. Most people are generally cool. I guess I'm just curious as to who seems cool and then turns into a uber-negative coward when they get online.
Posted 08/03/2008 at 08:53:18 PMJeremy, you're right that JJ is clueless, but you're dead wrong that Albini only does grunge albums. Cheap Trick, The Frames, Joanna Newsom, those dudes from Led Zeppelin...
Posted 08/04/2008 at 09:45:21 AMJumping Jillickers Jeremy.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 11:36:27 AM1.Jeremy, since your president of the be your own pet fan club do you think you could pull some strings and get them to autograph my lunchbox,it would really be special for me and the boys at the studio on our lunch break.
2.Albini has recorded/engineered/and or produced over 250 albums and singles,3 of which you could say are "grunge",those being 2 Nirvana and 1 Tad record.
3.I guess the Dinosaur jr. ripoff bands(minus the Mascis solos)that you record aren't "grunge" bands?
4.When are you going to come clean and let the bands that you record know that they can do pretty much the same thing that you do for them on a simple home computer system with a just a minor audio difference?
5.Why do you repeatedly defend the seriousness and credibility of a band that didn't even fucking tour before they were signed?
6.I would be really appreciative if you could get my lunch box signed,we might even have a food fight at the office.
7.Why the fuck do you keep defending a band that you wouldn't listen to in your spare time.
8.Electordinosaurgrunge
9.I didn't mean to offend the Nashville god of the recording industry.
10."sucks for the janitor!"
+lunchbox. no prabs! maybe i can get them to put some of their cocaine reserves in there, if you're into it (maybe autograph it also?)
Posted 08/04/2008 at 11:54:52 AM+albini only did in utero with nirvana... 2?
+i tell all the bands i work with that the atari i record on is high tech and i'd appreciate it if you didn't try to tell them otherwise
+stop stealing my ideas, shitbox.
+i'm no god, i'm just the messenger.
+i wish jack jack was a girl so that we could have one of those angry kiss sex things like on the tv. mmmm. "you make me so mad! squeeze my balls!"
+what's a the led zeppelins, a joanna newsoms or a cheap tricking? darrin, pleeeease. (read the sarcasm above, bro...)
+i win!
1. you're both idiots.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 12:14:25 PM2. mecca lecca hi mecca hiney ho.
3. members of BYOP have started 5 side projects since this argument started.
4. anybody got a dollar?
5. Steve Albini, Steely Dan, Mac G4, sitting in a dark room on your pimpled ass tweaking knobs, blah blah blah.
6. grunge...?
7. at the risk of being overly redundant (see above)you only get 7 numbers this time.
1. haha. probably so, yes.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 12:25:29 PM2. pee-wee...
3. wrong: 3.
4. if you got a pretty mouth.
5. : ( ass-pimples are an affliction... i don't know why you had to get personal...
6. grunge...!
7. you win too.
Yeah, I've always known I was an idiot. That was Phil Hartman that did Gombi, got rest his soul.Albini produced/or mixed, can't remember which, the Nirvana singles record released in 96 if I'm not mistaken Jeremy.I'm not the grunge expert that you are though,I never really liked much of that Genre(tad and mudhoney were decent)maybe you can correct me?I'd rather have the autographs than the coke though.Fuck it man,why don't we put together a band, shit BYOP had a no show show at the end while they were negotiating their big record deal. What do you say Jeremy,at least you have a sense of humor about this shit,I was just fuckin around anyway,as long as it's not recorded on an 8 track(ha ha!).I havn't called you any names and I like being called a "fucking moron",shit that can be my stage name.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 01:14:10 PMDON'T YOU NUMBFUCKS KNOW I'M A GOD!!! I engineered Surfer Rosa for fuks sake. I only did the bullshit Nirvana strictly for the money. NEVER SPEAK MY NAME AGAIN!!!
Posted 08/04/2008 at 01:25:38 PM"So JJ et al, why don't you grow a sack and show that you're actually proud of you're opinions: Let us know who you are. Let us know what you think deserves respect in the local scene. Come out to a show."
drew, you're like some kind of genius.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 02:42:14 PMwell put.
if one of Drew's favorite bands is De Novo Dahl then I don't think he has a "sack" himself.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 03:34:54 PMthanks for getting the short circuit reference, alternabattlegrunge. jackjack still hasn't offered an opinion about something he likes in nashville's music scene. i guess continuing this thread is pointless unless folks are gluttons for snarky comments. the one thing i would like to respond to of flapjack's digs at btapes is that it's rediculous to think every engineer is going to personally love every project they work on. people become friends through work and just generally hanging out and want to support each other more on those merits than what it would be like to be a 'fan' of something and have a totally different dynamic. i know and really like every member of byop even though their genre of music is not the kind of thing i personally dig these days (i seem to be mostly buying old country, soul, and lounge for the sake of this discussion). i saw byop at their first showcase out of nashville when the bassist was still 15 and had never even flown on an airplane before. they were in freaking high school. they were lucky/blessed to have a chance to get exposure out of nashville and they actually HUNG/HANG OUT in the nashville music scene unlike a lot of this city's exports. they actually had side projects, contributions and other interests besides their 'main gig'. a lot of 'trolls' on here really don't seem to care about the opinions they toss around but more so about enjoying being antagonistic for the entertainment of seeing who responds and how they do so. that's fine but if the thread goes this far, it's pretty lame to have not offered an opinion about something they feel positive about. i feel this reflects more poorly about a music scene than any band in any particular genre with any particular 'deal'. for the most part, i love nashville and i love how the scene has shaped up here over the years and i'm here to stay.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 03:37:44 PMfirst the Pink Spiders implode and now this?!?! another over-hyped mediocre Nashville band bites the dust. start forming your lackluster side projects now, Kings of Leon.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 03:42:32 PMLiking stuff is so lame.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 03:46:29 PMRe: JJ's original #4 . . .
To think, I had a big ass tape machine and all those mics laying around this whole time. Jeremy, I officially resign from the gang!
Posted 08/04/2008 at 03:57:37 PMYou guys are funny.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 04:28:57 PMI like how the trend has begun of linking your screenname to another webpage,I don't have another webpage to link mine to?That brought a tear to my eye "familiar sideman".You should start writing Hallmark cards or songs for John Tesh or Josh Groban.Who made this blog about what music I like?My only point was that put-together bands like Be Your Own Pet,who get label deals before they even pay any dues, and can't even play their fucking instruments make the music scene here look bad. What I like about "Nashville's music scene" familiar sideman is that it's so melodramatic,it's a scene that caters to itself.Local bands often draw more of a crowd than bands touring that come through town,it's like the dark side of highschool. Why do you think that everyone skips Nashville? It's because the music scene is so volatile,a progressive band books a show here and no one shows up,more social circles than people who actually care about the music, all this drama is great!I've worked in a few cities and have never seen anything quite like it,it amazes me.This particular blog is the best example,it's such a "good ol boy" music scene that a couple of critizisms about the battle tapes network and I got the wolves after me.You guys are great, keep up the good work!!!!Also,I know you can't always tag a producer or engineer with the bands they work with but Jeremy seems pretty adamant about defending BYOP at any turn so what's your point about that "familiar sideman"?Oh and as far as music beyond the roots music here "familiar sideman",honestly there isn't anything spectacular, but I know a lot of bands that I've seen here are more talented and skilled and deserving of a record deal than BYOP,I would say that most bands in Nashville are.I care about my opinions, but I'm not ready to take you kids on in Mortal Combat or anything, the circle outnumbers me greatly but maybe one day I'll get a battle tapes satin jacket of my own.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 05:29:02 PMthis thread turned into what you actually like because you have done nothing but offer negative opinions without offering something you approve of, and assertions that are just plain wrong. i LOVE dissent, i LOVE differing opinions but at the same time, i can't dig on some annonymous person accusing folks of stuff that just ain't right. your notion that the 'wolves have descended upon you' because you struck a nerve or dissed someone/some band is wrong. people have responded because you are, thus far, very misinformed. i thought you were just someone trying to egg people on but your last post suggests you are actually serious. you assert nashville is still a bunch of "good old boys". i think you've bought into this city's previous history a little too much. if you think people don't work with their friends and people they trust/like every where else you're naive. i'm defending byop and battletapes as people because that's what they are. i know it's easy to shred whatever modicrum of civility you MIGHT have when sitting behind a computer screen but can you really blame anyone in this thriving scene for calling bullshit on someone who clearly doesn't know what they're talking about? try not to be so jaded, flapjack. i'm sure you're pretty cool in most ways. i'm not being sarcastic. just... you know... have a little more faith in people.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 05:46:17 PMI don't like that shit,it's just really entertaining because I never saw it until I moved here. It's like a car accident that you can't help but stare at.Yo man why you gonna call me flapjack,I didnt' start calling you names, that John Tesh thing was a pretty good joke I thought?Thats cool man,I don't give a shit anyway. As far as being misinformed I work in the business,I see it every day so I'm not just spoutin out bullshit here.I'm familiar with everything music wise going on in this city.I'm sure your a cool dude so forget what I said.Jeremy has put down shit on these blogs before that he didn't like and I never saw anyone attacking him like this, why do you think that is sideman.I don't know what I "accused" anyone of?Can you not look at this blog and see that there are forbidden things that you just dont' question? That's just a pretty lame way for things to be sideman, just speaking from experiences I've had living in other cities.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 06:14:34 PMno, i don't want to start a band with you (or with anyone else).
it's "mortal kombat" (with a "k")
there's nothing wrong with 8-tracks... especially 1" 8-track. until recently, 1" 8-track and 2" 16-track were the highest fidelity tape recorders there were, as far as track width is concerned. i also use protools a lot, though.
i defend byop consistently cos they get loads of people like jackjack who will just say they were put together and never played a show before they were signed or something... all of which is not true. they had a lot of fortunate breaks but a good band who is teenaged and good looking will get more attention than a shitty band who is full of 30-somethings who are fat and ugly. and i also defend them (like i would almost any band i work for) BECAUSE I LOVE THEM. seriously. i love those kids. real love, not like "oh, they're cool." they are great kids if you know them and i care about them enormously. they're my friends. so of course i'll stand up for them. as for them as musicians, john (drummer) can outplay half the people i know on most instruments... and i know a lot of musicians. jonas is also a pretty great guitarist... writing parts that show off your chops isn't really necessary in songwriting so if they don't shred and that bothers you... well... ?
didnt you say earlier that no one came to byop shows? so, if that's the case, how do they now have huge draws that keep touring bands from getting well attended (?)
what bands have i talked shit about on here? i can't think of one off-hand other than saying the drummer for the tits plays too hard with his right hand and not hard enough with his snare hand... but that's not that they suck, it's just that their leaving drummer seemed like maybe a blessing in disguise. if i missed something else, please let me know.
there was other stuff but i got a session in a second so maybe later...
Posted 08/04/2008 at 07:31:12 PMalso, like F.S. said, you don't have to love every group you work with. i told the american bang dudes that i wasn't totally into their style of rock, necessarily, but i thought they played that style really well and they were also super nice dudes and really cool to work with (and i did like the newer songs that were more tom petty, less aerosmith... fucking HATE aerosmith)... with byop, i think their songs are catchy and i dig the music. i don't dislike it at all but, in my own time, i listen to bob dylan, the beatles, and a handful of other things that i listened to when i was younger and that i can sing along with cos i'm listening to music all day long and when i have free time, i need "palate cleanser" stuff like that so i don't blow my fucking brains out... music i've already spent months or years dissecting til i got back to just being able to listen to it and enjoy it as pop music that i can not think about.
Posted 08/04/2008 at 08:31:12 PMJeremy, you're awesome.
and I dont like aerosmith either
byop are not a put together band mr jack jack. So it's the old "someone has a someone in the music industry and so someone must be getting a handout" right?
i'm so sick of this argument. really.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 07:26:10 AMWe will just have to disagree on the technical ability of the members in BYOP Jeremey.I don't know though Jeremy,if you knew the guys in "Hold Steady" wold you stand up for them?Jeremy, this is what you said about the "hold steady":"this is one band i just don't get the hype with... ugly dude, band sounds like a crappy e-street band, their cover of "can you please crawl out your window" on the "i'm not there" soundtrack makes me want to fucking puke... if they do play that show on halloween, then there are 3 bands playing it that i care nothing about seeing."
Posted 08/05/2008 at 10:44:08 AMWhich is totally cool man,I even agree,I'm just saying everyone has a right to talk shit about things they don't like.If you feel that way about BYOP thats cool too,but people are bound to like and dislike shit because they are people.I haven't really seen people getting that worked up about things like this before in this cutthroat fucking business. And Cortney T,I can tell you anything is true or untrue without offering any information,WTF?
someone needs a day job. i hear John Bruton needs a handy man.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 11:00:12 AMSo glad this fucking stupid kiddy band broke up!!!!!!!!
Posted 08/05/2008 at 11:17:26 AMthanks cortney, i believe you. haha.
i am also tired of this. even the fun of joking has lost its thing. not that i was ever even worked up but i'm not even laughing outloud anymore -- a real 'net phenomenon, inventing the whole "people can LOL!!!" thing-- so i'll wrap it up.
yeah, i totally did talk shit about the hold steady... but they're not a nashville band... and i think that's what we're discussing... the whole "take the air out of the local bands" thing. either way, true, i don't like them.
also, it makes me feel creepy when i see someone type my name so many times in a post...
and, on that note... (fart)
Posted 08/05/2008 at 11:24:11 AMya know, jackjack sounds a whole lot like nemesisboy. and we all know who that was!
Posted 08/05/2008 at 01:58:03 PMMakes sense...naughty, naughty, Ben. you are a bad boy stirring up all this shit!
Posted 08/05/2008 at 02:05:44 PMYeah, Ben isn't "Slack" with his anonymous comments on the Cream, and it's common knowledge that he hates BYOP.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 02:13:10 PMWho the fuck is "Ben Slack"? They've changed my mind, BYOP was the best band in the world and the most punk and creative. Technically no one in town can match their super abilities. I'm so sad they broke up. It's funny how no one can even step up and say anything great about that band, but yet they attack people for being realistic about that "put-together" bullshit band. "I love all of them", give me a fucking break, don't mix alcohol and prozac or you'll get that result. What a bunch of scenester fucking babies.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 04:07:11 PMnice try, ben. you are BUSTED!!!
how would you know to ask who ben slack is. nobody said your name.
youre a fucking asshole troll on this board and you are driving people away from the cream. i like this site but you do this shit on so many threads here it's getting stupid and i think it's time for you to fuck off.
ben slack is a troll, pass it on.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 04:36:30 PMhaha. i hope it is ben cos i like him and that makes it funny again. if it's not ben then :((((((((((((( (look at that internet sad face! he cries of the 1's and the 0's)
Posted 08/05/2008 at 05:49:58 PMThat's called binary.I'm serious though, when is the BYOP reunion planned?I don't know what I will do without the amazing energy they bring to the stage, they don't use cocaine either to get it I know it's all natural Ginseng. They are totally straight edge and the guitar player's technical skills are better than Steve Vai.I don't know if I want to continue knowing that this band will no longer play live or record.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 06:02:54 PMI didn't realize Ben was that big of a douche.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 06:17:59 PMyeah and if I wanted to be Ruth Bernhard,I probably wouldn't be living in Nashville photographing local bands at the End and crying when teeny-bopper bands broke up because I didn't have anyone else's "cool status" to leech off anymore. Didn't know there were this many old folks that like music geared toward 15 year olds. How more lame can this get?
Posted 08/05/2008 at 07:03:54 PMLike I said, who the fuck is Ben?And "rebecca" i didn't say a fucking work about you, wtf? But since you chose to attack me,let me give it to you straight. If those are your photos on flickr that you linked to your name, don't quit your dayjob to become a professional photographer o.k.Trust me.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 07:28:40 PMdude, whoever you are, could you just totally fuck off, please? if you were ever funny and/or joking around, you've really drug it out... remember the saying "quit while you're ahead"? well, pretend you're ahead at something and just go away or come out with it and let someone beat the shit out of you for real...
Posted 08/05/2008 at 07:43:52 PMYeah we trust you, BEN SLACK!!!
Posted 08/05/2008 at 07:51:47 PMOh wait, let me address you by your real name.
We trust you BEN WILKINSON of THE NORTHRIDGE RANGERS.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 07:54:39 PM"JackJack's friend"? Fucking seriously? You guys are fucking gutless.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 08:25:46 PM"come out with it and let someone beat the shit out of you for real..."
Posted 08/05/2008 at 08:50:49 PMDamn, what happened to "just the good ol' boys, never meanin no harm",I guess Waylon Jennings was lying about you guys.I better get outta here before the hardcore battle tapes posse finds me and beats my "gutless" ass!Jeeper Creepers!
Man, if you're concerned about physical violance from me, or Jeremy, or Loney, or any of the pudgy, pastey cats in here, you are way off base. All I'm trying to say is if you know that we know who you are, you are probably less likely to talk so much baseless, unkind shit about other human beings. Take the grocery bag off your head and say what's on your mind, or shut the fuck up.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 10:19:19 PMOh shit, I just figured it out. Jack White hates BYOP.
Posted 08/05/2008 at 10:24:28 PMMike not to change the subject of you guys kicking my ass and all but how do you feel about BYOP? You've posted several times backing Jeremy but never really said a word about the band that this blog is actually about, just seems a little curious that you havn't even discussed BYOP at all but your telling me to "shut the fuck up"?
Posted 08/05/2008 at 11:10:59 PMmike... i only use my blade for cheese or fruit. i won't be of much help kicking any annonymous ass.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:10:36 AMJackJack youfucking tyope sofcuking badley iwant to tuter your stuped ass.
And when you were posting as "Rob Vanili" back in the Hold Steady post you were quoting Jeremy from, you should have taken my advice then.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:22:17 AMif you want something good about BYOP, here ya go. their first album was genuinely awesome. the follow-up was good as well. they're smart players, not virtuosos mind you, but good arrangers with what they're playing. listen to Jamin's drums on Wildcat, then let me know if some other "kiddie punk" band is doing creative beats like that.
Nathan and Jonas are always in the pocket, Jemina's bratty scream/sing was refreshing (don't really agree with all those comparisons to Karen O.), and the fact is, when you saw them live you knew they were having FUN. and to me that's one of the most important things a band can impart to its audience. when Jamin left, the power didn't because John came on board and carried the gauntlet quite well. BOTH of those dudes make me wanna quit playing drums.
so i understand that it's obviously not your taste, JackJack, but there are a lot of people who like their music, passion, and personalities as people. that's one of the reasons why they're being vigorously defended on here. so there's a fan's account of the music.
who do you think should be getting more coverage?

Posted 08/06/2008 at 10:29:40 AMThis thread makes me sad for some people.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:22:09 PMI guess if thats your thing "High on Life" then thats cool, but people shouldn't get so shitty about other people's opinions, jeez? Sorry Malina, that wasn't me, but if your looking for something elequent enough to enable you to gratify yourself while taking an intimate bubble bath I wouldn't look to a blog. I would go to the paperback section at the grocery store if I were you. Hope you enjoyed the run-on sentences.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 02:10:03 PMJackJack is clearly Brett Fritter of AutoVaughn.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 02:25:06 PMI didn't realize that NashvilleCream was all about BYOP. What do I think? Personally, I'm not a fan, but I also don't think that they are a "stupid no talent band" or "fuckin terrible", and I certainly don't agree that they "made the music scene here look fucking ridiculous."
