She & Him Sell out at Mercy
Anyone who’s seen Elf knows Zooey Deschanel has a damn fine set of pipes. Hearing her with M. Ward as She & Him on their debut Volume I, it is pretty much unmistakable that the girl can sing. I was a little curious as to whether or not her voice would transfer well to a live setting. That is, until I saw the above video from She & Him’s performance at SXSW.
As most of us know, touring acts with a considerable draw that are booked to play Mercy Lounge tend to move their performances to Cannery (The Raconteurs, et al.). Not so with tonight's show. According to the folks at Mercy, this one ain’t moving (apparently due to the preference of the artists). Good luck getting in, though. The show sold out pretty swiftly, and I know more than a few folks who are trying to track down a ticket.

if this is a "damn fine set of pipes" i totally disagree. i dont see what all the fuss is about. havent heard the entire record though so perhaps im speaking too soon. dont hear what you hear. m ward is alright in my book though.
Posted 07/30/2008 at 11:52:21 AMFair enough. Her voice definitely isn't what most would consider conventionally beautiful, but I think it's unique and quite strong. Her vocal melodies and Ward's arrangements mesh really well, and I think it will probably be pretty neat live.
Posted 07/30/2008 at 12:12:39 PMyeah, i think maybe their whole thing is slightly overrated but she's cute and he's kinda famous and it's still pretty good stuff.
HOWEVER, ole charlie louvin is opening and even though his voice aint what it used to be, he's fucking charlie louvin.
Posted 07/30/2008 at 12:19:34 PMThis show will be spectacular, congrats to all who

of the opportunity to let you know that if you don't have

(bracing for verbal assault.)
Zooey = hot.
Posted 07/30/2008 at 01:54:15 PMOl' Charlie totally owned it, man. That guy still has it. Too bad I heard that she wouldn't allow a bona fide musical legend/American treasure to be in the same room with her backstage. Guess she doesn't own Satan is Real or Tragic Songs of Life. Or maybe she's just a diva. Yeah, that's it... probably just a diva.
Posted 07/31/2008 at 12:34:54 AMSaw them tonight in Nashville. The show rocked! I have some pictures at my website http://www.inrebasworld.com - more will be coming!
Posted 07/31/2008 at 12:35:57 AMAt first it seems really bitchy of her, but now that I think about it, Ol' Charlie is known for making some crude/dirty jokes about women... saw him at Grimey's and that proved it. Maybe she thought he was one of those "old pervert" types.
