De Novo Dahl on Spin.com

Is it just me or does Joel J. Dahl look like he could be a character out of The Chronicles of Narnia? A kind, fun-loving creature, of course.

SPIN.com's Peter Gaston sat down with vocalist/guitarist Joel Dahl and bassist Keith Lowen of indie-pop eccentrics De Novo Dahl; watch video of Peter catching up with the duo about noxious costume smells, the pros and cons of being signed to a metal label, and a certain dance-rock band whose mothers aren't too happy with them. They call this "dance rock" now? They should call it "lame rock".

jimmy dahl said:

They played my son's kindergarten class and totally rocked it out!!

jo bob dahl said:

I hate to say it too but de novo dahl has gotten cheesy in a terrible way,and I would rather this band split then further employ Keith Lowen, sheesh!!

sneezy dahl said:

Gotten cheesy? (Gotten is supposed to be in those slanty letters.)

i've always loved their debut EP.

dopey dahl said:

Maybe they should work more on their music and less on their costumes. I also like the debut EP but this new stuff is awful, I have no clue what they're getting at with this stuff?

joel looks like the geico caveman

I think the Spin video is hilarious! Especially when Matthew is acting really surprised that people are calling de novo dahl "gay" in blogs. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but when your dancing around in pastel colored Libarace suits and singing to "let all your feelings out" what would you expect people to think?

Say Say Say said:

I understand. This interview says it all. The "journalist" likes to talk more about their image than the music itself. The lead singer comes off very arrogant. This is not a good interview. Boring to the point it almost makes you feel a bit sorry for them. Funny how the lead singer says it gets "packed" after the second song. yeahhh rrrriiiiight.

P Diddy Dahl said:

Yes "say say say" didn't you know that De Novo Dahl just plays one song and the masses storm the massive venues. This band is soo lame now it's nearly pointless to discuss them anymore, and I like how they blame all their negative press on disgruntled metal kids. What a bunch of babies.

Brett Dahl said:

Why does the scene give this band so much press?

curious said:

Just wondering if anyone had heard that Dave Cloud and the GOP has gotten great reviews in New Musical Express, MOJO and Vice magazine for their newest record? Or that Dave Cloud had a documentary shown about his last 2006 European tour at the Belcourt fairly recently. Or that Dave Cloud had a successful 2008 tour, during which Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye expressed their approval of Dave's band and stageshow? Or that Dave was the most prominently featured person from the Budweiser ads in europe, with his face plastered all over billboards in subways and on major streets. And all over British TV.

I guess you guys really are more concerned with covering the newest nudie suit that DND is wearing.

JUst curious why this hasn't been newsworthy to anyone out there???

Lucifer Dahl said:

Yeah give Dave his props he's been playing in Nashville for twenty five years. I heard De Novo Dahl were making music to try and tap the teenage market now but I would think even teenagers think this shit is stupid.

Curious too said:

Could someone tell me what this band is supposed to be about? Is this stuff supposed to be funny or ironic or something? I really don't get it.

Dave Cloud Fan said:

Thank you someone , anyone for bringing up Dave Cloud. I too think it is shameful he doesnt get more coverage via the scene, this blog, the rage---- it is disgraceful. HOORAY for Dave Cloud.

Just Sayin said:

I am not a Dave Cloud fan, but I will say he does deserve coverage considering his international "notoriety"....However, it doesn't hurt do do a little self promotion sometimes. A lot of the reasons bands get promoted in the press is because they send out things like e-mails and press releases to local press outlets. I would have to presume Mr. Cloud doesn't do too much of that. The Scene doesn't have offices in England to report from, last time I checked.

hmmm said:

Or you get coverage by being friends with the writers at the Scene. I guess JEFF, BYOP, DND, HIBTB, Chris Crofton, the Features et al. send out press releases everytime they play?? Whatever happened to searching something out, especially something you're bound to have heard of, like dave cloud?? I'm not the biggest fan, but i did hear about Dave being in the bud ad (from this blog), which, in itself, might have piqued a writer's interest. If you guys only cover what you're sent, then no wonder so much worthwhile stuff happens and you don't notice it. and, sadly, you DO notice the same stuff about the same bands every time. Unfortunately for them, some bands don't have a scmhoozer bone in their bodies. I guess they'll forever be non-entities...

Just Sayin said:

Well, hmmm, some of your comments are curious. I can't speak for all the bands you listed, but I know for a fact that HIBTB and DND send out press releases everytime they breathe. And Chris Crofton definitely lets people know when he's playing. BYOP has major label backing, so yes, they have promotional people behind them. Dave Cloud has been around for a long time, and if you had been paying attention for more than two months, you would know that the Scene has covered him, positively, for years.

ummm said:

Saying that the scene has covered Dave Cloud for years is not accurate, he has been given very little coverage. Just because De Novo Dahl sends a press release every time they crap doesn't make it news worthy. WTF??

Just Sayin said:

I agree. I hate De Novo Dahl and I'm tired of hearing about them. Referring to Dave Cloud, you must not have read the Scene when Jonathan Marx was the music editor.

uh huh said:

Yes I know he has received some coverage over the years, my point being that his recent success has been ignored. I hate De Novo Dahl too, but I suppose they have writer friends at the scene. We are seriously reading about their stupid ass suits and how they clean them when a resident musician like Dave Cloud is plastered all over Europe on billboards. It's frickin ridiculous? Fuck De Novo Dahl and their lame suits, they suck!
