A Reason to Go to Murfreesboro: Southern Girls Rock 'n' Roll Camp Showcase Saturday
Saturday night, Murfreesboro's weeklong Southern Girls Rock 'n' Roll Camp ends with one terrific showcase where all the bands strut the stuff they've learned that week. The camp is often the first time these girls have ever picked up instruments, much less crafted original material. But the camp is about more than just teaching girls to rock—it also shows girls about the myriad ways you can be part of fostering a local rock scene through classes on merch, bio writing, promotion, running sound, recording, etc. Think of it as a mini-RIM program for kids, and the showcase as the final exam. That said, it's a whole lot of fun to watch young women ape the rock posture and command a crowd, and you'd be surprised at how many of the covers and originals are actually pretty awesome. It's too late to volunteer for this year, so for now, plunking down the $8 is the easiest way for the general public to support the cause.
