I was kinda stoked when I got back from an extended lunch break to find local punks Cheap Time in the "Editor's Choice" section of the All Music Guide home page. I clicked on the link, and lo and behold: Those fuckers didn't write a damned thing about the album! Four stars but no fucking review. WTF, AMG?! Do you think we're really going to settle for a listicle of adjectives like "Rambunctious" and "Guys Night Out"? Heyzeus H. Christo on a gawddamn crutch, put a little effort in....

AMG is a great resource most of the time, but sometimes the details get lost in the shuffle. For example, did you know that I produced an album called Louisianna Swamp Blues, Vol. 4 in 1993? According to AMG, I did.

JEFF, Be Your Own Pet, Cheap Time...has anyone noticed a trend in what the Cream really likes?? Youngish bands that shamelessly ape 70's punk/new wave. Don't get me wrong. These bands put on energetic live shows, but their respective albums are incredibly derivative.
Granted, to paraphrase Mike Watt, it's unfortunate that we weren't all born at the same
time, but these young bands need to realize they aren't fooling anyone by copping riffs off the great punk bands.
I hate to say it, but the existence of these bands confirms that Punk is, indeed, DEAD. Give 'em some time, and, they, too will hopefully realize this...

There's nothing "punk/new wave" about JEFF The Brotherhood. They are Rock Music in it's purest form: three strings, drums, and loads of riffage.

Be Your Own Pet are the closest thing to the spirit of punk, real punk, that I've heard in years.

Has anyone noticed a trend in what people like to hate on? It's great they have an opinion, but these posts are incredible derivative. These posters need to realize they aren't fooling anyone by copping the complaints of the great blog responders.

Hey Simple Mike,

And according to AMG, apparently I played drums on the album Hoke and His Orchestra Bop, which, if you've ever heard me play drums, is quite remarkable. (I did play guitar on the record.)

Hey, Toldyou, you're response was really clever.
It would just be refreshing to hear someone say it like it is, you know, to employ some critical thinking in these matters. To say any of these bands (and countless others) is above reproach is just plain false. And to have Pitchfork or Thurston say your stuff is good just holds no weight anymore for these ears. I'm not hatin', just asking for the sycophants and apologists to step aside for some true criticism (constructive or not).

Why do you think those bands are trying to fool anyone? So what if their influences are similar in some ways to what they do now? If you can recontextualize it and make it your own, which I'd argue all 3 of those bands you're referring to have done, then you've done what every musician has since the beginning of time - build off what inspires you and make it your own in some way. Any band around now is up against the legacy of those who did it first, so what's your point?

Try listening to the songs on my page and not being able to pick out each riff as something that was around 30 years ago. You'd be extremely hard-pressed. The only thing I can hope is that my music is another slant on an old idea, or maybe another take altogether.

If those who post on this blog like them, that's not the bands' fault. Respond to that post and start writing for them. Then you can talk about what you like around here.

Id say more, but he made my point.

Hey, I just want to say that the exchange between What?? and Toldyou was equal parts civlized, funny, refreshing, and intelligent. What the hell's going on here?
