mellow down cheesy.
this must be a jam band.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 08:51:52 AMThey are jam-ish. More like Cream. 3 piece heavy blues rock.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 09:30:50 AMThey are somewhat jamband-ish. Think Cream meets the Faces.
The show tonight is a mix of Grunge Rock, Metal, Blues rock, Southern Rock, Prog/experimental rock, Hard Rock and Psychedelic Rock.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 09:34:30 AMwow, sounds terrible.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 09:53:07 AMgreat attitude.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 09:57:17 AMits not for everyone. But nonetheless, we are going to have a good time.
BTW - ws. What would a perfect 8 off 8th lineup be for you?

People still play Grunge?
Posted 02/04/2008 at 11:22:10 AMShadows of Light has to be the worst band name I've ever heard. Even worse that Tigers Con Queso.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 11:39:07 AMturtleneck and the sweats

skyblazer
hands off cuba
the privates
girls on film
Posted 02/04/2008 at 12:51:03 PMMinds function when they're open. Don't judge a band by their name or even description.
But what about accurate descriptions?
Posted 02/04/2008 at 01:01:49 PMNice list, I'll Bite.
Dave Cloud - I hear he is amazing.
Altered Statesman - Last years fave band of many - i am sure they are continuing the momentum this year
The Privates - Dave Paulsen and friends are awesom indeed
Hands Off Cuba - Character meets Lambchop - very cool indeed
Skyblazer - heard of them but know nothing about them
girls on film - is this a duran/duran cover band? No idea.
Turtleneck & The Sweats - funny name - what are they like?
Posted 02/04/2008 at 01:03:34 PMWhitness,
Are you a narc?
ws
Posted 02/04/2008 at 01:20:09 PMNo - I am a DJ.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 01:25:34 PMAre Turtleneck and the Sweats still around?
To answer the question about "who are they," they were probably the best live bands in Nashville a few years ago. Someone really literal minded would have called them "shticky" but they were about as shticky as Suicide or the Stooges.
Really loud, really abrasive punk rawk, with a singer who would wear tight gym clothes and would work himself into an astounding trance by singing/screaming at the same time he was told to do pushups and other sweaty workout routines by an MC who was acting the part of a high school wrestling coach/PE teacher (David Cloud was the "coach" at one show). The people in the front would end up splattered with sweat and even (real) blood at the two shows I saw.
I saw them when I first moved to town, then they went off the radar. "Turtleneck" himself I have gotten to know somewhat from seeing him around, and it's hard to believe that the real guy, who is polite and really laid back, is identical to the singer in that band.
Someone else has to remember them-- am I wrong in thinking that around 2003 or so they were the best thing in town?
Posted 02/04/2008 at 01:28:59 PMi wouldn't go so far as to say "the best thing in town." they were entertaining in a "local performance art" kind of way, not like "this is a great band with great songs" kinda way.
like all bands like that, the shelf life of the "joke" just isn't that long. a shame.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 01:44:22 PMThanks - sorry i missed them if they are gone.

Posted 02/04/2008 at 03:54:32 PMDrew, why on earth would you host an even like this on a monday? Seeing as how you are often a huge supporter of 8 off 8th, don't you think this is a little inconsiderate?
Or are you only doing this because it wasn't your night to host 8 off 8th so you don't give a shit?
I don't know, it just seems like a big event like this should be taking place on a different night.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 07:08:04 PMWell...... Tomorrow is Tennesse's Primary!
So its time to vote.
That's why ya do it on a monday.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 07:29:19 PMyes. indeed. turtle neck is chris davis himself. THE BEST rock band to EVER come out of nashville . no songs? BS. they had great songs.. catchy as hell. too bad they broke up. twas good while it lasted. maybe we can push for a reunion.
hands off cuba is character meets lambchop?
i dont agree at all.
Posted 02/04/2008 at 08:55:33 PMSaw T&tS open for Rocket From the Tombs. Chris spent the whole show making bologna sandwiches on the floor of the club. Even though he put a tarp down, there was still mayonnaise fucking EVERYWHERE. He mopped it up before RFTT's set (I'm guessing at management's behest) but we still spent the rest of the night with our feet slowly slipping out from under us.
I remember this, but could not tell you what Turtleneck & the Sweats sounded like. I do remember very clearly the look on David Lloyd's face during their set and feeling more than a little embarrassed, for some reason.
Posted 02/05/2008 at 08:37:41 AMyeah drew. why the hell would you do a voting rally the NIGHT before voting day? how dare you
Posted 02/05/2008 at 09:04:06 AMTN&S songs I recall are "Tough Actin' Tinactin" and "I'm Gonna Get Blown Tonight." My wife got bled on by Chris at a Red Rose show back in 03. After he jumped off a mini trampoline and collided with a pile of PBR bottles, cutting himself somethin nasty. It was Awwsum.
Posted 02/05/2008 at 02:21:55 PMI think you mean Television guitarist Richard Lloyd who was filling the guitar role of the late Peter Laughner in the Rocket From the Tombs reunion band. He didn't enjoy the miracle whip stench. At all.
He liked even less my praise for his guitar playing after the show when we were getting paid in the office. Went something like this:
Tneck: Mr. Lloyd, it's an honor to open the show for you. I'm a huge fan of your guitar playing.
Lloyd: Fer crissakes kid. Put on some pants.
Reminded me of my celebrity encounter with Dick Cavett in a New Orleans muffuletta shop while on a trip to see Tony Williams perform in the Big Easy.
Me: Hey Dick!
Dick: Kid if that wasn't my name I'd punch you.
When the hot side is hot and the cool side is not so cool, the miracle whip spoils kinda fast.
