Potato Chips and Shrimp and Grits

On a recent rollicking weekend, we managed to eat at Suzy Wong's House of Yum, Patterson House and Capitol Grille, all in 24 hours.
We noticed that a celestial food, homemade potato chips, can be found all over the place. Throw in hot dogs and hamburgers, in petite sizes, and you've got the new American booze sop. They're fun to eat, and the examples we tried were well-made, with stylish touches.

It's a wonderful change from the deep-fried foods peddled to barflies since the first Bartles & James wine cooler was poured under the first hanging fern some 35 years ago.

Another weekend observation: Shrimp and grits are everywhere, plain and fancy, from brunch to dinner. It prompted a fill-in-the-blank game that we couldn't complete. "Shrimp and grits are the new ______________."
