Alleycat Closing

So long, Fat Ball. Alleycat Lounge, the popular East Nashville hangout known for its fiendishly delicious and artery-busting fried avocado--a.k.a. The Fat Ball--is closing. Steve Muller, who co-owns the Five Points landmark with his wife Shelley, says changes in the economy and the neighborhood are driving them out just short of the restaurant's sixth birthday.

Muller considered various scenarios of restructuring, including shifting the focus to higher-margin alcohol sales in lieu of the popular handcrafted Tex-Mex food offerings such as Drunken Chicken and stacked enchiladas. In the end, he said, "I didn't want to change to just a bar."

Alleycat will say farewell to the neighborhood on Monday, Jan. 19, with a bittersweet old-school East Nashville-style blow-out. Meanwhile, if you have a favorite Alleycat tale you'd like to share, please post it on Bites.

Alleycat Lounge is located at 1008-B Woodland St. (phone: 262-5888).
