Things To Eat In Nashville Before You Die

In the Scene's annual Fall Guide this week, in an article titled "The Big Chill," Tracy Moore compiles a list of 125 things that Scene writers say Nashvillians should do before they die. (The image we swiped from Skulladay.com.) Among the food-related entries:
• Have afternoon tea at the Hermitage Hotel.
• Eat at Athens Restaurant on Franklin Pike at 3:30 a.m. after a long night of drinking.
• Have a pie and a pint at Family Wash.
• Eat a fresh doughnut at the Donut Den on Hillsboro Road.
• Chow down on a pulled-pork sandwich at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint in Nolensville.
• Buy veggies at the Farmers' Market on a Saturday morning.
• Eat a cheeseburger and a chocolate-dipped cone at Bobbie's Dairy Dip as the sun sets and the outdoor speakers play the Night Train to Nashville CD.
• Sit in the Arcade at lunchtime while eating a slice of Manny's pizza or a pepperoni roll.
• Eat an entire Giant King hot fish sandwich from Eastside Fish, "the crunkest fish in town."
• Try the chocolate-chili ice pop at Las Paletas.
• Sit at the bar at Jimmy Kelly's and ask Lee the bartender how he spent prom night in 1983.
• Dare to order sushi from the Sushi Nazi at Sam's Sushi.
• Try the extra-hot breast sandwich at Prince's. (For practical reasons, make this last on your list.)
That's just a few. Additions? Deletions? Suggestions?

Is the object to speed up your demise?
Posted 09/11/2008 at 08:34:38 AMI'll be doing one of the things on this list this very day. Eastside, reprazent!
Posted 09/11/2008 at 09:27:13 AMI might be up for that...
Posted 09/11/2008 at 09:44:12 AMOkay, I want this skull printed on an apron! To go with my Joy Division oven mitts.
Posted 09/11/2008 at 09:50:33 AMI've managed 4 of the above: Dairy Dip, Eastside Fish, Manny's Pizza & Sam's Sushi. I've also had the 'pie' at the Fam Wash, but not the pint, and Mild is all I can handle at Prince's. Been to Athens, but not at 3:30am, and had a donut from the Den, but it was far from fresh.
Posted 09/11/2008 at 10:01:41 AMI think I feel sorry for Lee the bartender.
and don't be afraid - I've always taken home the extra hot so I can add more zip to it. You can, too.
Posted 09/11/2008 at 02:00:54 PMI would add something nice and simple. A good cup of coffee in a mug on the patio of Bongo Java (Belmont location) on a crisp fall day.
Posted 09/11/2008 at 02:47:21 PMmilk crate table in the kitchen at tayst
Posted 09/11/2008 at 05:36:22 PMTrue story. Actual dialog from my first visit to Princes 15 or so years ago. "I'd like to order extra hot." "Have you ever had extra hot?" "No." "Then you don't want it."
Posted 09/11/2008 at 07:30:28 PMI wholeheartedly second Joe P... with your dog and a good book
Posted 09/12/2008 at 01:23:38 AMThat is great. My new favorite is the little grotto behind Mitchell Deli in Riverside Village—a quiet, shaded, breezy little patio with doggie drinking facilities, almost European in its disregard for the tyranny of the clock.
Posted 09/12/2008 at 08:34:47 AMGood thread.
Posted 09/12/2008 at 04:16:07 PMFried green tomatoes at Tin Angel.
Fried avocado at Alley Cats.
Portabello sandwich at Way Out West (oops, too late).
Piranha's sandwich with a couple of Blue Moons at lunch on a work day.
Friday afternoon beer, wings, and nachos at Brewhouse West (see you there in a few minutes).
At the risk of rerouting the nearly departed, I tried Piranha's cheese steak sandwich the other day, and I left most of the inedibly greasy mess lying on my plate in a fatty puddle. The inadequate bread oozed grease out of every pore, the meat was tough and tasted like an unclean griddle, the cheese was barely there. Big disappointment. I'd hate to think that would be somebody's last meal, either by choice or effect.
Posted 09/13/2008 at 11:50:04 AMThe fried avocado is great, though.
Posted 09/13/2008 at 11:51:18 AMThe chocolate mousse at Miel.
Posted 09/19/2008 at 08:52:36 PMEthereal,a complete and multiple mouth and tastebudgasm.
You must have this before you pass to the other world.
The chocolate mousse at Miel.
