The Ugliest Meal in Town?

Because of International Market, there was Thai food in Nashville by the late 1970s—which seems funny, in retrospect, since Nashville has not traditionally been a foodie town. (But come to think of it, we also had French restaurants back then.)

There's been a noticeable uptick in quality over the last couple of years (though you still occasionally end up with food that has dried out on a steam table). The menu at International Market hasn’t changed much in 30 years, and like a lot of people I usually get the same thing, the combination I call “The Ugliest Meal in Town”: spicy eggplant and curried tofu. Delicious.

If there’s an uglier meal in town, though, I’d like to hear about it.

By French restaurants, do you mean Julian's? Man, that place was horrible—it almost killed off French cooking in Nashville for good. Truly the snottiest service I've ever seen. I remember a waiter coming over one time and blowing out the candle at my table.

Then again, Fluffernutter, it didn't help that my dinner companion was Cornwell on payday.

International Market has been keeping me alive for years. I still look back fondly on my daily fried rice - pepper steak era. Full plate of food for $3.50. Nowadays I can go to PM and really get down...

Over the course of my graduate school career, I have probably had more than 100 meals at IM. I love it and what it does to our neighborhood.

And. You. Survived. To. Tell. It. Big Fella heard this tale and gave a great big New Jersey "OOOOOhhhh!" Because those Cornwell paydays were very trying. Even I lived through one. In Mexico. Cars were totaled.

I wish I still lived close to IM. I remember loving that spicy eggplant back in the early 80s...

They serve some of the best homemade Pho in town.

The summer rolls are the easiest appetizer in town. Take your own platters and Mrs. Myint will plate them beautifully for you.
