Legendary Wines, Good Kids: Vintner's Tasting Coming Soon

If you missed the James Beard dinner earlier this month, you have a second shot at a great wine and food dinner with the Opus One Vintner’s Tasting vertical tasting dinner set for Sept. 25 in Franklin.
The event, sponsored by (and held at) Hallmark Volkswagen of CoolSprings, will pair food from Red Pony with legendary Opus One wines from three vintages, 2002-2004, plus a surprise wine. Click the Opus One link to research the qualities of each vintage—you don't want to go into these things unprepared.
Diners will loosen up with champagne and noshes of tuna tartar with wasabi and white bean spread with blackberry-shallot jam. A seated cheese course follows, matching the 2002 vintage with French, Dutch and Oregon cheeses, sea-salted almonds and fig-and-quince cake with the 2002 vintage.
Chef Jason McConnell, sometime of F. Scott’s and now a fixture in downtown Franklin with his Sol and Red Pony restaurants, will whip up seared beef and prosciutto-wrapped scallops to accompany the 2003 vintage. Dessert bites of Chocolate Demise and Raspberry Red Pony Candy Bar get a bellywash of 2004. The meal finishes with a mystery wine.
Proceeds benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Williamson County. Tickets are $200 per person and available at www.winedownmainstreet.com or by calling organizer Mike Hyland at 599-9706.

Why are figs everywhere all of a sudden? They're like the new pomegranate.
