Edisto: You Make the Call

Posted September 05, 2008 at 02:09:42 PM by Carrington Fox

A word to the wise: If you’re headed to Edisto—the new South Carolina-influenced restaurant at 1711 Division—or Sweetgrass Smokerie—the delicious-smelling barbecue window located behind it—you might call ahead. Yesterday, Edisto was open for lunch, but a note on the window at Sweetgrass explained that it was closed until late afternoon. Today, the barbecue joint was open, but the full-service Edisto was closed. When we asked why the schedule was so erratic, the folks at the Smokerie said Edisto had been so busy they had “run out of product.” The restaurant is expected to be open for dinner tonight, but a call to 712-9218 would not be a bad idea.

Everything about his restaurant seems very sketchy....

I have driven past Edisto many times at prime dining hours on prime dining nights, and it has been virtually empty. I am skeptical of "we've been so busy we ran out of product." last I checked most grocery stores are open round the clock. unfortunate but this happens when new restaurants don't have the capitol to get by for the length of time it might take---months, years in some cases--to get in the black. How do you make a small fortune in the restaurant business? Start with a large fortune.

funny, because that's how you make a small fortune in the music business too...

i went to edisto for lunch last week and they had run out of one of their appetizers - and the bbq place had NO brisket... but my blackened catfish sandwich was surprisingly good. (but the shrimp caesar was pretty meh...)

god bless 'em

You don't run out of all your food at once. You run out of employees when they don't make any money. If it was so busy, wouldn't all of us foodies hear how great it is. All I hear is negative stuff. If your restaurant, especially your patio isn't full Fri. and Sat. in this town, you have big problems. When I drive by it's a ghost town.

There are small fortunes to be made in the restaurant business? Wow. To my chagrin, that's
news to me......
and probably news to every other independent restaurant owner in Nashville...

I ate at Edisto a handful of times now and have found it to be a very pleasant experience. It has the BEST patio seating in Nashville (in my opinion) under a giant tree. Everything I have ordered was excellent and came to the table in a timely fashion. I would definitely eat there again and recommend it. The Pomegranate Molasses Short Ribs I ordered were awesome as were the shrimp and grits I got the last time I was there.

I was a little skeptical going to Edisto because there were only a few people eating there. But I wanted to try it and was surprisingly blown away by the food. Everything we ordered was beyond good which is more than I can say for most restaurants I eat at in Nashville. Maybe new restaurants just take some time catching on.

Lee and I ate there one day and had shrimp grits and some smoked chicken wings and we were surprised how good it was. If they got their business act together I'd think they could make a go of it.

when a brisket takes 14-18 hours to smoke, it's not like if you run out you just pop another one on the grill. I'm not in the restaurant bid-niss for a lot of reasons, one of the many being I don't know how you estimate how many briskets to purchase and then put the labor in to smoke without making some mistakes along the way.

Had brunch there on Sunday morning. Best food I've put in my mouth in a long, long time.
