Photojournalism Sans Photos: Ghot Wingz

Intrepid Scene photojournalist Eric England recently called our attention to Ghot Wingz, a new dine-in restaurant in East Nashville just north of Nashville Auto Diesel College. James and Sharonda Stone opened the restaurant in June and are serving a menu of burgers, fried whiting and catfish, pork chops, salads and fried chicken. As the name suggests, the main offering is 14 flavors of chicken wings, including Asian heat, Buffalo and garlic-parmesan.

James, a veteran chef and alumnus of J. Alexander's, developed the recipes, and he fries everything to order. We haven't been to Ghot Wings yet, but Eric offers this critique: “The wings are pretty damn good—sweet sauce with bit of pepper floatin' around in there.” Words like that are worth a thousand photographs.

Located at 2501 Gallatin Ave. (facing McClurkin), Ghot Wingz is open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Starting Sept. 7, Ghot Wingz will be open 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday. As always, if you get there before we do, please report back on Bites.

sorry, but I couldn't disagree more about the name. Ghot, yes I get it, got, hot, wow, clever. Except it also suggests ghost wings, which is amazing sounding but not very filling, and finally sends me to more asian suggestions, and I've completely lost the point altogether. I'm sure that's just me and it will wind up being wildly successful and trademarked for millions.

Full disclosure: I find any 'z' substitute ending off-putting, simply because you saved nothing - it would have been an 's' if spelled properly, so what in the name of texting was the point? It's like the advent of the 'k' subsitution - we go along with the myth that it started as an almost clever way to force aliteration on two like-sounding but different lettered 'k' sounds, but when you wind up with Krispy Kreme - when they're both C's to start with - again, what was the point? We wind up with the total language-abdication achieved in Kwik Kopy, the beauty and history of English and its semantics and etymology reduced to reading by phonics. Sorry, I guess that's fonix.

but yes, please tell us about the wingS...

I got the garlic parmesan wings, which are awesome at Dee's Q. I did not like them as well here: Dee's are dry, and these are wet with a sauce that tastes a lot like salad dressing. But the plump, freshly cooked wings themselves ($4.99 for eight) were strong contenders: wonderfully crunchy and crusted on the outside, tender and juicy inside. I bet the Asian heat (which came recommended) and buffalo versions rock.

The big story, for me, was the first-rate, filling-but-not-fearsome hot fish sandwich ($4.49, I think): two big but easily manageable fried whiting planks sticking out of white bread with a splash of hot sauce and a schmear of yellow mustard. It was exactly what you'd expect, but it wasn't so overloaded with fish or condiments that you couldn't fit it in your mouth. The onions and pickle were generous, and the whole sandwich had a nice springy crunch. Plus it held together perfectly. It's a great addition to the Nashville hot fish tradition. I'd go back in a heartbeat, Fluffernutter.

Every since the 1st time I visited GOT WINGZ, I have been unable to stop eating there. They are so friendly not to mention when you call your order in, you will walk straight in with NO waiting, your order is ALWAYS ready when promised. I have tried a variety of wings (asian heat is the best) and fish. So if you love GREAT, HOT, DELICIOUS food, this is the place to be! I let a couple of co-workers taste my wings (12 for 6.99) and now we eat lunch there WEEKLY. But hey, you don't have to take my word for it, go try it yourself. P.S. if you're not in a rush, take time to watch TV or play pool.
