Roux the Day at Ri'chard's Café

If you haven't been out to Ri'chard's Louisiana Café since former Scene editor Liz Garrigan wrote her one and only food review, it might be time for a return trip to the Whites Creek eatery. Richard Trest, the musician-restaurateur-horse farmer who once explained that he didn't serve étouffée because it was too high-maintenance, has changed his tune. He has added the grueling roux-based delicacy to his dinner menu, and he now offers the ultimate New Orleans-style labor of love—beignets—at brunch.

In the three years since he opened his restaurant-music venue in a historic storefront, Trest has also taken a turn toward seafood and healthy dining options, adding more soups and salads. With a menu of blackened and grilled fish, fried pickles, vegetarian red beans and rice, and po'boys and muffalettas on Gambino's bread, Richard's serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m. At Sunday brunch (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), he adds waffles, banana pancakes and other breakfast fare. Just don't ask him to flambé a bananas Foster for you. To do that requires rum, and Ri'chard's doesn't have a liquor license.

The first night we went out to Ri'chard's we were pleased to find such authentic Louisiana fare and wonderful original music. It felt like home and our kids wanted to go back next time we suggested a night out. We've been back several times and it's always the most fun you can have while enjoying an exceptional meal that we have found in the Nashville area. Expect to be treated like family and don't be in a rush. Enjoy!

We recently performed at Richard's Cafe and not only was the Cafe great to play at but the food and staff were outstanding!

Take the short, scenic drive up 65, grab a table, enjoy superb music and savor the ambience!

I'm starting to wish Richard, who, by the way, doesn't actually have an apostrophe in his name, served breakfast on Tuesday morning.

Richard's is fast becoming one of my favorite places. The great food, down home atmosphere, and wonderful music are an unbeatable combination. When Richard takes a break from cooking and joins the musicians, it becomes a real Saturday night party. And where else can you get Louisiana Chicory Coffee on Sunday morning in Nashville?

no liquor license, does that also mean no beer/wine? and if so, can you bring your own?

Ri'chard's has beer and is working on a wine license

For some reason, the James Beard people never called after I wrote that brilliant piece. Fox, thanks for reminding me that we need to get back to our neighborhood spot. If only there were blue cups.

Ri'chard said:

But we do have blue cups! Salvaged from the General Jackson remodel. This week they have pineapple / pecan bread pudding with .... rum-like ... vanilla sauce. chez bon.

And once a week a Face/body artist comes in to put a fun, or pretty design on a pretty face, or arm or ankle. And has designs for handsome guys too. She has even painted a cross on the back of a neck, done glitter tattoos on necks, arms and ankles. Face paints wash right off while Glitter tattoos last a few days.

She is here to add more fun to a already fun place to visit or frequent.

joyfully,
Sara Offutt FAce/body artist.
