Chilly Reception

Mike Hanlin, the Pittsburgh transplant who brought you Piranha’s Bar & Grill, has finally opened the doors to The Big Chill. Located in The Market Street Emporium on Second Avenue, The Big Chill will offer a creative menu of sandwiches, soups, salads and pizza bagels. Hanlin is even making smoothies out of cereals, such as Cap’n Crunch and Froot Loops. Eventually, the menu will expand to include breakfast. Catering is available, and delivery is coming soon. As always, if you get there before us, please report back on Bites.
Located at 112 Second Ave., The Big Chill is open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. Phone: 712-6163.

Posted 03/14/2008 at 04:21:15 PMHey now. I hear the Cap'n Crunch smoothie has arugula.

Posted 03/14/2008 at 04:36:59 PMSpeaking of Toucan Sam's rainbow-guano-like cereal...
I once broke up with a stone-cold Fox Brasilian for constantly munching on Fruti-Lupis (aka Froot Loops).
That, and because she despised Lucio Fulci's Zombie, but was absolutely enamorada de "Can't Stop The Music"

Posted 03/15/2008 at 05:52:44 PMthe story wasn't THAT good, but I still can't fathom why it printed twice
Posted 03/15/2008 at 05:55:07 PMI gotta say, I'm with your stone-fox tropicalia-babe ex on this one. I've never really been a Fulci fan (although the zombie-bites-shark scene is great), but how can you not love Can't Stop the Music? The "YMCA" number alone almost makes me hyperventilate from laughing.
In a couple of weeks, the Belcourt is showing Bruce Weber's Let's Get Lost, an amazing doc about the late jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. Included are clips from a 1960s Italian musical starring Baker...directed by none other than Lucio Fulci! This has been a Mr. Pink High-Geek Intensity Moment.
Posted 03/16/2008 at 01:25:33 AMCan't Stop the Music is the first movie I ever saw on cable. That and Going in Style with George Burn, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg.
Posted 03/16/2008 at 12:20:51 PMPink et Carrington:
You see, my dilemma w/ the whole Village People/Brasilian grrl. flick was that I positively, unequivocally and terminally hated disco, which consumed Latin American like radioactive cancer. You couldn’t swing a dead Coatimundi without hitting a Manero wannabee. To this day, there are still discotheques with light-up floors, with only work with hideous zippered boots.
Let’s Get Lost, will check it out. Not a fan of Weber’s work, more into Herb Ritts.
And Carrington, Tne first cable flick I saw was A Little Romance. And I *think* I recall geezerfest bank robbery you refer to.

You all should look into the Veggie Cafe, which opened this weekend over on Riverside Road. As is, the situation over there is very not good. As in very bad.
Posted 03/17/2008 at 08:56:04 AMThanks for the VC update. We encountered Dawn of the Veggie Cafe last summer, wen she was simply Dawn of the Veggie Mobile Cart. The food we had was really good, especially the meatless meatloaf and the smoothies. It's been a long road getting into an actual storefront, so we're looking forward to seeing it, but we'll probably wait a few weeks to let things get settled.
Posted 03/17/2008 at 09:00:15 AMCan't Stop the Music is on Flix right this minute!
Posted 03/17/2008 at 01:05:10 PMMy gawd, we're like The Magic Box on LOST!!!
Can we collectively wish for, say, being able to buy vino at Krogers?
Posted 03/17/2008 at 01:53:27 PMUh-oh, here come the Others.
